"If you speak to another human being, this book is for you. Whether you are the one talking or the one listening, the tools in this book will improve your ability to effectively communicate with others, and the stories convey a practical way to put the tools to use. The 'put it into practice' sessions give you the opportunity to improve communication by doing the exercises suggested by the author. The 'before you move on' sessions take you to a deeper understanding of the concept through other scenarios or factors. Overall, an easy read; very practical and useful tools to improve communication; avoid misunderstandings; resolve conflicts; and engage in a deeper, more intimate relationship with others." --Teresa Garcia, LCSW, NYCDOE, School Social Worker
"I was excited to read this very important guide to honing the skill of Active Listening Techniques by Nixaly Leonardo. This topic is something that most people take for granted, but active listening is a therapist's most important tool. Ms. Leonardo has done a great job in consolidating her active listening experience as a therapist with additional information from other important sources into one easy-to-read, practical guide. Therapists and laypeople alike can benefit from the information contained in this wonderful book, especially those who are interested in sharpening their listening and communication skills, and taking their relationships to the next level." --Anna Reyna, LCSW

Thorough and comprehensive, the author describes the fundamentals of listening, obstacles to listening, how to work on yourself (your own distortions, expectations, etc.), the best ways to get through to others, persuasion tools, how to deal with emotionally charged situations and much, much more.
Very readable with practical tips and tools, this is definitely a book you should read and re-read occasionally. It definitely deserves a place in your reference library!
My sincere thanks to Rockridge Press for sending me a complimentary, no strings attached digital copy of this book. This review is absolutely voluntary and unbiased.
The book begins by focusing on you: personal distortion, expectations, mindfulness, self awareness...then moves on to focus on others: asking the right questions, choose the right time & place to communicate...next she deals with difficult situations: gaslighting, persuasion, silence, giving what’s needed...and moving on to business communication: interviewing, refocusing, compromising, constructive criticism, confronting colleges, saying no...
Each TOOL is followed by a brief page or two called “Here’s the Story” where Leonardo provides an in situation example of the topic for the reader to experience her technique in action. It’s followed by how to “put it into practice”and what are “the right & wrong words” to use in the situation as described. This is done for each and every tool and makes up the bulk of the book. Each TOOL section closes with a little grey box called “Before you move on”. In This space, the author give 4-5 brief bullet points to summarize and project what might happen in the future or how the reader might be feeling after the interaction.
“Active Listening Techniques” closes with an extraordinarily small Resources 1/2 page, Reference 1 page and Index
1 1/2 pages. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a reference book with documentation that limited...🧐
All things considered, an interesting book that’s easy to read & apply and also makes common sense 📚
