Product description
Possibly the most profound "rock" album ever, with Van sounding like some Celtic bard over the jazzy accompaniment of bassist Richard Davis and MJQ drummer Connie Kay. Utterly unique.

Timeless soul music

Funny that some people rate this 1 star because they just don't get it - thus they claim it is "over-rated". Better they had just walked away and stuck to music they understand. This is Van at his most passionate and liberated expressing his stream of consciousness to the accompaniment of some of the most amazing, sympathetic and subtle musicians you could assemble in one place. Catchy it isn't, perhaps it evades immediate appeal, but it has a sustained groove that sinks deeper and deeper with each play if you let it, until it becomes part of your musical psyche. I have the vinyl from the 70's, the original CD and now this remastered release which is absolutely superb. Van Morrison has never sung better than this or captured this mystical meditative spirit (he comes close on Veedon Fleece) since. The improvisation by all players is breathtaking and create a profound, personal nuance rare in studio recordings. Every track is a stunner (or a slow slider perhaps) - The Way Young Lovers Do is incredible - Van does Sinatra swing, but better than Ol' Blue Eyes, i don't recall another song that has such a complex swing. Madame George is exquisitely plaintive. And then there are some brilliant alternative version bonus tracks. Masterpiece without a shadow of a doubt

Better than I thought

I had heard the vinyl recording on Youtube and was worried that this CD would not sound as great, but it doesn't disappoint and I love the bonus tracks where you can hear the studio chat before the Van starts to sing the extra tracks...play it a lot at home and in the car.

Classic album from the late-1960s.

Although 'Van the Man' doesn't particularly float my boat, this LP is definitely worth listening to. It's a slow burner but, in terms of pure song writing and superior musicianship, it really does tick all the boxes. Proud to have this one in my collection - lovely stuff.
