An excellent book covering all aspects of the way things are moving forward. As expected Brett with his rich experience and that of his colleagues presented how we and every aspect our lives will be augmented in future, which in turn shows what we should be ready for. As with his earlier books these predictions are bound to come true. Some of them have already started. What is fascinating is, the changes as described by Brett King and his co-authors, are happening at a rapid pace right now and are clearly visible.
Some of the interesting observations are the advent of embedded and personal technology augmenting daily life and behavior, the augmented man supported by Augmented Reality, Personal Head Up Display and preponderance of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality.
The topics are built up gradually ending up with clear predictions for the future with an optimistic note welcoming the smart world of the future.
The authors cover important areas like Transportation and conveyance, Banking Finance, Health care, Education, Smart cities etc., where technological innovations will radically change the way we experience these in the augmented age. They have presented in-depth description of how things will be totally different from the present in these areas. The reader would get an idea of how one should be prepared for such changes and be ready for adoption as these changes occur. After reading the book, as a banking professional I liked the way technology disruptions are going to happen in banks. As a customer I know what I should be prepared for. As an individual and a family member taking care of health I should gear up for the changes. As a consumer and as a resident of a major city observing transformation I am keen to be a part of the transformation. Who should read this book; in my view, everyone, whether in business, profession, ordinary citizen, students, young old, because the future is happening now and it is better to be prepared for the transformation; derive maximum benefit out of the technology which is making it possible and enjoy the life in the smart lane as the authors put it.

An Optimistic View of the Future

This is a great book if you want to be optimistic about the future. The world is transforming in many ways, as we've all seen in 2016, but you may not be as aware of the technological changes as you are the political changes.
My area of work is in analytics that support financial services. Cognitive technology (or Artificial Intelligence) is a natural extension of advanced analytics, and if even half of the predictions come true, we're going to have a great future.
Let's look at self-driving cars. This is happening now and could in use in a big way in less time than you think. Is the world ready for this? I think so. We haven't seen a reduction of drunk drivers despite heroic efforts by many groups. Now we see an increase of traffic crashes as a result of people texting while driving. Also, the roads are getting so crowded that it isn't much fun to drive most of the time. For these reasons, I believe that wide acceptance of self-driving cars will happen soon. Tests have shown that these cars are safer than human drivers. For more great predictions around self driving cars, read Brett King's entire book. He covers this topic in quite a bit of detail.
I first met Brett King through twitter as he is often listed as one of the top fintech influencers in the world. When I asked about his radio show Breaking Banks, Brett himself responded and encouraged me to listen to two of his favourite episodes. I laughed when I listened to the first that he recommended and one of the topics was Toronto's former crack smoking mayor, Rob Ford.
Earlier this year I invited Brett to be a guest at IBM's World of Watson conference and to my surprise, Brett accepted my invitation. Brett spent a week learning from IBM and others who are working in the cognitive area of technology and he produced a radio show, a podcast, and a few blogs as a result.
I was more impressed with Brett in person than I was on social media. He really is an optimist as am I and he has a way of explaining complex topics in a way that it is understandable. So, I picked up the Kindle version of his book and read it while on vacation. I loved reading about the advancements that are being made in healthcare, finance, and even education.
Sure there will be some pains as a result of the changes that Brett is predicting, so we need to think of ways to keep our skills sharp so that we are able to fit into a world where you can "google" anything and where computers are advising us on everything, and doing all the mundane tasks like scheduling appointments, shopping, tracking, etc that we need to do now.
If all goes well, we should have much more free time to explore the finer things in life. The biggest obstacle might be what we do to earn money or what to do with our free time, but humans are capable of adapting, so let's see what happens. (less)
