Gundam Fans
That’s good and potentially surprising news for Gundam fans, who have been relegated to importing games in the Gundam Vs. series, which are typically released only in Japan. Western fans of the Gundam Vs. series’ brand of two-versus-two and three-versus-three battles have had to settle for the Japanese releases and Bandai Namco’s Rise of Incarnates, a Windows PC fighting game that was released and subsequently shut down in 2015. (Last year’s Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme VS-Force was released worldwide on PlayStation Vita.)
Bandai Namco promises 'over 90 Mobile Suits spanning more than 35 years of the Mobile Suit Gundam universe' when Gundam Versus hits PS4 later this year.
Check out the game’s announcement trailer above and a taste of the Mobile Suits coming in Gundam Versus in the gallery below.

Gundam Versus features over 90 Mobile Suits spanning more than 35 years of the Mobile Suit Gundam universe, and it is headed to the West for the first time on home console. The game revolves around two-versus-two and three-versus-three team battles.
Each playable Mobile Suit comes with their own weapons systems to learn and master, along with new mobility options that allow for advanced strategy to evade and outwit opponents.

So, no, I do not "like" this version, but It is far from being bad just because it lacks local coop. But as a multiplayer-heavy type of game, losing coop is a blow to who you can play with and where you can play the game. Imagine if Street fighter, tekken, super smash bros, or fifa suddenly lost offline local coop play in their next version.

So I have not played a Gundam game, mainly due to the poor reviews they have received over the years. But Bandai Namco has really put a lot of effort into this game, so does it pay off?
The game is essentially a 3D fighting game. You have many Gundam models to choose from, which is really a great plus. The controls are fluid, but take a lot of getting used to. Really this game is screaming for a fighting stick. You really can't master the moves with the standard controller without really giving your fingers a massive workout!
The game is pretty simple: you pilot a mobile suit of your choice, and are paired with a partner. Then you fight against other mobile suits. You have one player and online modes. You pick a suit and it has a cost. This cost is used when you get destroyed. Have a costly mobile suit, you could end up losing if you get wasted even once! Have a lower cost suit? Probably need to be very good to win since they tend to be on the weak side, but you can get scrapped several times no worries. It makes for good balance. You can't pick the best suit and expect to always win. Sometimes the best is a 300 or 400 cost suit.
The suit all have different styles and moves as well. This makes for a ton of variety. Beginners would do well to pick ranged weapon favoring suits such as MK II Gundam or similar suits. I actually really like Unicorn Gundam, it is very balanced and the NT-D mode is pretty great. But regardless, the game gives you many options and each have a different feel - not all carbon copies of each other. You can then further customize by selecting your 'Striker', basically your assist suit/weapon. Most are locked, so you need to play using certain suits to unlock these and pay the GP cost. GP is obtained from playing through the 1P mode. It can also be used to unlock pilots, emblems, titles, and navigators. So you need to both level up individual suits, and gain GP then unlock these extras from the MS Development menu. I only wish there was a limited palette option that was unlockable. It would be sweet to have a purple Unicorn Gundam or a silver Sinanju or a green Exia.
There are also a few other disappointments. There are not a ton of stages to fight on and several of these are pretty bland. But some are really interesting and offer a lot of landscape cover. One of my biggest peeves is the lack of one player story mode. You basically pick a stage and there is a brief intro about one of the series, but then the stages seem to be all mixed with various Gundam series. I would have really enjoyed a Gundam Seed story mode for example, where you fight either as Strike or Freedom, or one of the Zaft suits (Buster, Duel, Blitz... where is Aegis???). Then it would have been cool to have stages with lots of fodder suits and then a few battles featuring characters from this series (how cool would it have been to face a powered up Providence Gundam in the final battle?). Also, no subtitled translations for the Japanese voice (other than your navigators default is annoying Haro - I unlocked Bright Noa as soon as I could!). But the biggest disappointment is no local 2 player. So if you want to play with or against your friend, you both have to have the game, separate PS4s, and two TVs. Annoying since my wife and I enjoy playing fighting games against each other.
Also, additional DLC suits would be great, perhaps cheaper than the current $4.99 and perhaps lump a few together by series. I would love to pay $5-$10 for several suits from Gundam Build Fighters!
These don't really detract from the overall great feel of the game. It isn't perfect by any means, but it is a great fighter that will appeal to fans of the franchise. I did not feel that this was a shallow or hollow game. I enjoy complex fighting games such as Guilty Gear, Blaz Blue, and Street Fighter, and this had a good level of depth that was of course not to the level of those games, but great for a game that appeals to fans of the show and probably didn't need to have much polish. The 3D style took me some getting used to since I am mainly a 2D fighting game player. But once you get the hang of side stepping, it gets much easier. Blocking is tough, but handy and is also worth getting used to. Especially for online play.
+ Great music - almost all from the various Gundam series
+ Dozens of mobile suits ready to play right from the start
+ Quick loading times
+ Amazing graphics on the mobile suits
+ Really fun
+ Good mechanics, solid fighting game
+ Suits are all unique
- Want more stages
- Lackluster 1P modes
- Unlockable palette swap would have been cool (and easy to do Bandai!)
- No subtitles other than navigators
Final recommendation: Solid 3D fighting style game. Definitely made to appeal to fans of the series, but also built to appease fighting game fans. There are a few things that could have been improved, but this is getting this series on the right track.
90/100 (4.5/5 stars) - gave it 5 to weight it up a bit on the Amazon ratings rather than lowering to 4.

If you are a Gundam fan and you own a PS4, I implore you to purchase this game. Not only is it a lot of fun with great replay value, but it could make or break future Gundam titles coming to the West. This is the first main series VS game to come to the US in over 12 years, and I'm hoping Gundam Battle Operation 2 will also be localized. Regarding pre-order customers: you received the pre-order code via email a day prior to receiving the game. Don't give the game poor reviews solely because of your own personal mistake.
