Kevin DeYoung’s new book The Biggest Story Bible Storybook is a wonderful way to introduce children to individual stories of the Bible while helping them grasp the main storyline of Scripture. It’s beautifully illustrated, fun to read, and will help parents teach big truths to young hearts.” |
Matt Smethurst, Planting Pastor, River City Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia; Managing Editor, The Gospel Coalition“Magnificent. With typical clarity and verve, Kevin DeYoung captures the wonder of the greatest story ever told. My children are going to have a hard time reading it, though, because their dad will keep stealing it to read himself.” |
Emily Jensen, coauthor, Risen Motherhood: Gospel Hope for Everyday Moments; Cofounder and Content Director, Risen Motherhood“Through rich, understandable narratives and striking illustrations, The Biggest Story Bible Storybook captures children with something even more beautiful than this book—the story of redemption. The great: there is no racism or anti-semitism like in early Bible story books.
The disappointing: I originally bought this story book because I thought it would be a more modern version of Egermeier's Revised Bible Story Book (1963).
However God is stripped far too much from this book.
For comparison, The Sermon on the Mount is probably the most important aspect of Christianity and as you can see (photos) it's stripped down to not even include a single word from the actual sermon. Whereas Egermeier's is a consumable chronological Bible for children this is, again, more or less a book based on the Bible.
Unfortunately just about every story is like this. The authors silly statements like "you can't trust snakes", reignites the archaic concept of snakes in general being evil, (something much of the Western Christian community has moved past) we really shouldn't be teaching our children that innocent animals are "untrustworthy" in 2022.
All in all I'd say if you can't get your hands on Egermeier's this will do just fine until around age 8.
