The Black Diamond Gridlock Magnetron Carabiner combines maximum security and ease of use like never before. The Black Diamond Magnetron GridLock uses the power of magnets to reinvent the auto-locking carabiner. Magnetron Technology uses two magnetic arms in the gate and a steel insert in the carabiner's keylock nose to create an ultra-secure, self-clearing and redundant locking mechanism that can be easily used with either hand. Combine that with our innovative GridLock shape, which traps the belay loop to eliminate cross-loading, and the Magnetron GridLock is the ultimate belay carabiner.I-beam spine with a large round rope bearing surface.Made in the USA.Weight: 78 g (3 oz).Closed Gate Strength: 22 kN (4,946 lbf).Open Gate Strength: 8 kN (1,798 lbf).Minor Axis Strength: 7 kN (1,574 lbf).Gate Opening: 21 mm (.83 in).

With that said, the point is the extra security of not being able to forget to lock a screw gate and in this regard the magnetron system wins over the traditional screwgate. The GridLock system is also a plus eliminating the possibility of loading the minor axis of the carabiner and keeps everything in line. So this particular carabiner offers the highest level of safety and security, but also mandates the most steps to manipulate.
I still use it every climbing session and haven't had a single problem. I never feel like the magnets are going to fail or hang up . Even with an auto-locking belay device (GriGri, LifeGuard, etc) that puts metal to metal between the belay device and the carabiner the finish is still holding up even after months of clanking around on the harness and belay duty.
I like it, but I don't love it simply because of the extra manipulation, but still use it regularly because of the extra security benefits. Placing safety over speed is my preferred method.
