UPDATE REVIEW: after 5 weeks of using this item- I noticed my 6 week old began to have an indent in the back of his head (posterior plate). I began to research causes and another blog mentions that the boppy noggin nest caused her child to have an indent as well. There is also another pillow being sold on eBay that states “unlike pillows with a hole, this does not cause indentations of the head”. I have a lot of mom guilt now, considering I bought this specifically to prevent flathead and abnormal skull formation.
UPDATE REVIEW: my little guy is 5 months now and his indent is still there but rounding out more. I have spoken to two pediatricians and they think it will hopefully round out but advised against these pillows. I know this won’t happen to everyone, but just want to warn people in case it does that there is a happy ending in the end as their skulls are malleable.
Cons- My baby does not like this pillow when laying flat. He starts to fuss almost immediately, even if I put him down while asleep. He can move his head from side to side, but I think it restricts the movement more than he likes. Either that or it is shaping his head too fast. Because of this, I can only use it in the seats that are inclined. I think you need to use it more often to see results. Also, the fabric part that goes under his body is thin and flat while the pillow is raised. He has a short neck so it elevates his head and makes his chin tuck to his chest. I worry about his ability to breath in that position. To make his head and body level I place a folded receiving blanket on it. Overall, I am glad I have this pillow to use in the things he will tolerate it in because I believe it is helping to prevent his flat spot from getting worse.
I'm also happy to say that we can once again use a rock n play again and not have to worrying about flat spots because this fits perfectly in there. The rock n play has been a lifesaver for getting a fussy baby to sleep and nap so I'm so happy we can still use it despite the hard plastic that flattens babies heads.
