If you got a PS4 around launch, odds are the rubber is worn and peeling off the sticks. These are put together differently and won't peel. They seem a lot like the sticks on newer models.
Installation is not super-easy, but isn't difficult. It requires a very small phillips screwdriver (not included), but otherwise no particular tools or skills. You have to tear down the controller a bit to get to the sticks, so watch a youtube video of it first. As long as you don't lose any screws or small parts, you're probably not going to break anything. It is possible to dislodge the trigger contacts and end up with an unresponsive trigger, so be sure to double check that before you screw it back together.
If you have a newer PS4 controller, these don't offer any kind of meaningful upgrade. They're strictly for repair. But they do the trick, and it was a lot cheaper than buying a new controller.
