I read the first book in this series and liked it. I had some trouble with it because it reminded me of another series I'd just completed and it threw me off a bit. However, the ending on that one was pretty surprising and really enjoyable.
This brings me to The Carnelian Tyranny. I bought the book soon after it came out, but put off reading it because of the niggle in the back of my head reminding me about that other series (a favorite of mine). However, I shouldn't have wasted my time putting off this book. Admittedly, it started out with lots of mushy stuff (not really my thing), but around Chapter 4 or 5, this thing took off and I was on a ride that held my attention (and often my breath) until the end.
The book takes place in Carnelia, a kingdom in a dimension that parallels modern-day Earth. It is a land of knights and kings, queens and princesses. In this book, the heroine Marissa and her fiance Prince Darian through the fight of their lives, for themselves and for the kingdom of Carnelia. They and the rest of the royal family are marked for assassination by a cousin who desires the throne and tyrannical rule of the kingdom.
The story parallels many elements of Christ's story with the Royal Family playing the role of the Disciples. For a Christian, the story is a reassurance of a belief system and its reliance on the Trinity. That said, the story itself will not overwhelm a non-Christian or make her/him feel "preached at".
Overall, this is a well-written adventure story with spies, murders, gripping action, love, despair, and surprises (that ending - whatever will Mark do now?) that will hold your attention until you reach then end and realize Ms. Koevoet is still writing the third installment. How long will I have to wait for that one?
