A fascinating read! Terry Ryan has jam-packed this book with useful information. -- James O'Heare, "author of many dog training books including "Aggressive Behavior in Dogs""
Thoroughly researched and thoughtfully written, this text is an excellent survey of the many boggling complexities of dog training in the twenty-first century. -- Jean Donaldson "Director of The San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Academy of Dog Trainers"

A wonderful, comprehensive resource!

This is an excellent book for people who wish to coach others in how to train their dogs. As you can see from the table of contents, this book is packed with 406 pages of advice and information, and it is a very thorough resource. It is written in easy-to-understand language, and would be useful to supplement any dog training class. Information contained in this book is very general, and one would need to look to other sources for more specific information on individual training topics (such as handling aggression, excessive barking, etc). I highly recommend this book. Please mark if you find my review helpful. Thank you so much!

CPDT Study guide

I got this largely as a study guide for the CPDT exam. It's an easy to read and informative book (*for someone already familiar with the material I found it incredibly easy to read, it may be a little more challenging for totally novice people). Unlike some of the other suggested study material for the exam, this book is really easy to read and get through--not as dense as some. It covers a wide range of topics and information required for both the exam AND for being an effective trainer.
It would be a great resource for novice trainers to learn some of book knowledge required to be skilled and efficient trainers of dogs and coaches of humans.
***Update, I just took the CPDT exam and a huge portion of the test came from this book--so it was absolutely fantastic test prep!

You started training dogs because you love dogs, but to be an effective group or private trainer, you have to be able to teach people, too. This book helps you put all those behaviorism skills to use on the other half of your client/dog teams. It is detailed, thorough, and extensive. It is also an enormous book, not something you can slip into your purse or blend in with at the coffee shop. I really wish the the trainer in the very first dog training class I had attended had read this book, it would have made being her student so much easier.

A lot of great info in this book all the way from ethology to lesson plan ideas for holding classes. If you are a new/ novice trainer, or a more experienced trainer with a growing private client list and you need ideas for class offerings to keep them moving forward there is a lot to get out of this book. It is totally worth the price.

Terry Ryan is an excellent dog trainer and her book demonstrates that. It is thoughtfully organized and chock full of information. She even includes samples of the handouts for her classes at Legacy Canine.
I do believe she has an updated version coming out soon, but I really wanted to get started studying for the CPDT and just didn't want to wait!
I'm enjoying Terry's easy to read writing style and absorbing plenty of information!
