I first looked at a Scuf controller 5 years ago. I filled out what controller I wanted and almost laughed when I saw the price was $180. How did it cost $130 for them to just put a couple tiny plastic paddles on the back of a controller?
I never bought one and refused to because that price was ridiculous. So I see this Strike Pack a couple months back. I read reviews for a couple weeks and watched videos and finally decided to order it.
It came in the mail and I set it up and plugged it in. It didn’t work. Long story short I fiddled around for an hour and realized the USB wasn’t even fully plugged in to the controller.
I read some people say that you really had to PUSH HARD on the USB until it clicked a second time, but I underestimated how hard you had to push. So I really gave it some elbow grease, it snapped in, and ouilla it worked.
It took 30 seconds to sign in and map the buttons and I was off.
The game I’m playing is the one everybody is sick of hearing about, Fortnite. But the very first game I was able to jump around and build and shotty at the same time without moving my thumbs. It was amazing.
Now here we are a couple months later and I’m twice as good as I was then. I’ve won a bunch of Solos and have no problem outplaying most people because I don’t have to move my thumbs around. This thing has worked amazing and it’s incredibly cheaper than anything else like it out there.
I didn’t want to write the review because I have an advantage over everyone on console by using this thing. But at the same time I hate that Scuf has a monopoly on modded controllers and charges 400% of what this thing costs. And it’s also odd to me that the negative reviews on here will end up saying they should “Just buy a Scuf” instead.
So if you’d rather spend $40 instead of $150+ I’d say give this thing a try. You won’t regret it
-I got this mainly for the price. $40 for this instead of $200+ for a scuf controller was so worth it.
-paddles are amazing with fortnite in particular. The one aspect of my game that improved was my aim, because the benefit of paddles is you can jump and switch to build mode without removing your right thumb from the aiming toggle.
-I won’t necessarily say it improved my building, but I will say it has slightly improved my editing which was surprising.
-this is more of a con for me because I have small hands/fingers, but i wasn’t really able to reach the paddles it comes with and had to purchase their alternative paddles on their website designed for “a relaxed fit” aka me lol
-you have to keep it plugged into your ps4 at all times and it cannot be wireless.
-paddles in general, whether it be this or a scuf controller takes time to adapt and re learn muscle memory. It took me a solid 2-2.5 weeks on playground mode practicing before I felt comfortable going on disco domination, and then to an actual game. Now I’m starting to feel very comfortable and confident in my building and fighting again, but I was a bot in the beginning transition stages.
Overall, it was 110% worth it. It holds up better than scufs do apparently (my friend just had to send his scuf in for repairs and he hasn’t even had it for a year).
I also want to add that I don’t use the mods, I heard you could get banned for using mods in fortnite so just be careful. I also play black ops 4 and love the paddles in that game too (being able to jump and crouch/slide while aiming in that game is nice as well).
I've had the item since May 2017 and have put many hours into using the paddles add on. The device fits very comfortably on the Dual Shock 4 controller and I even have controller grips on mine that I was able to trim down to fit around the paddles. The paddles themselves are in a slightly different position than what the standard SCUF controllers are; As in, the Strike Pack requires almost a "trigger" pull like that of a gun trigger, but with the middle finger. Mind you I have slightly smaller hands than possibly some users so this took some adjustments for me. If you have long fingers I don't see this presenting much of an issue. One thing I believe you'll notice with this device that I believe far exceeds that of the traditional SCUF controller that may have been worked out through the newer SCUF models is the ease of remapping your buttons to each paddle. Whichever function you need the paddle to serve on the controller can be mapped to the back paddles. Also, while this function is active your traditional buttons still remain active should it take longer than normal to rewire your muscle memory to rely on the paddles. After about 1-2 weeks of using the device I found myself relying on the paddles very comfortably during normal play. If you're a seasoned gamer you should be familiar with the controller mapping known as "bumper jumper" wherein you jump and melee (in FPS) using the left and right bumpers or R1 and R2. A large problem I've found with this function is that it still requires the user to remove their thumb from the right joystick to perform certain functions that may be required in your particular game. With the paddles however, You can use them in conjunction with this Bumper Jumper in mind, or as I use it myself, with a standard control scheme; Therein, allowing the the user to lose control of the joy stick as little as is possible. After several months of use with the device, I've found it to be very durable and very comfortable to use. The device allows for some very high level game play allowing the user to perform maneuvers and skills very quickly and comfortably.
Some of the downsides I've noticed with the device are some connectivity issues. Occasionally the device can disconnect its self wherein it requires a constant connection via the micro USB cable. When using the device and plugging it in using the cable you must additional "activate" the paddles by pressing the PS button on the dualshock 4 again and registering it to your current user profile. Typically you shouldn't encounter any issues doing so, but I found that on the off scenario that the device wasn't coming on, simply removing the micro USB and reconnecting it would resolve any issues. The paddles themselves are attached via magnet so there's no need in worrying about breaking the paddles, although if you're not careful you may accidentally remove one of your paddles from its magnetic slot.
Overall I would greatly recommend the product though it isn't without its flaws. Mainly any problem you may have with the device will be a minor inconvenience that is rather easily fixed. I would also recommend the product in conjunction with some good controller grips and thumbstick mounts via KontrolFreak or others if you're so inclined!
