Not my favorite as a school counselor

Cute book, but as a school counselor the premise that we feel lots of feelings falls a little flat in this one. Also, for others who might use the Zones in their practice this does NOT align with the colors and feelings and is very confusing to kids who know them (like my students do). Well illustrated, though!

This book was nearly ideal for us but....some of the messages seemed unfinished.
1) Anger. That was big WTF for me. ‘Sometimes you want to take out your anger on others. But I’ll be nice to you, Color Monster, and your anger will disappear.’ ..............hmmmmm........soooooo okay......what do you do with that anger instead? Is it okay to be mean to someone and take out your anger on them? And the message of, ‘when you’re angry, life can feel unfair:’ That felt unfinished to me and self defeating so I added, ‘even if it’s not.’
2. Fear. That was minor but I added, ‘you are brave!’
3. The end of the book. That felt unfinished to me too. Now that you have the emotions all sorted and identified what then???? All better? I added, ‘you know what they are. It’s okay to to feel and have all of your feelings.’ I’ll add to that after I have read the book to my kids that all of the Monster’s feelings are sorted out and identified so he knows what they are called and how it makes him feel.
This book is for my 2 and 5 year olds so I tried to keep my edits about their understanding of things and have talking/teaching opportunities

Good concept but is lacking

The way the author describes how some basic emotions feel to a child is very nicely written. Simple, clear language, and spot on. It gives the child a great way to verbalize an emotion when parents ask “what’s wrong?” or says “use your words”. It’s a vitally important skill for a child learning to identify and manage emotions.
Understanding how they feel and learning to describe it is a big step for a child, but it’s only the first step. What are they supposed do do about it?
I am very disappointed with the book overall because there’s a monster of a disconnect. The author identifies several emotions and assigns each one a color. At the end of the book each emotion is shown in its own bottle. However, the author doesn’t explain to the child HOW they are supposed to get past an emotional episode, especially an uncomfortable one. No suggestion are given to help a child learn strategies to overcome an episode. HOW does a child put an emotion in a bottle?
Isn’t the concept of “bottling up” one’s emotions an undesirable strategy for dealing with emotions when a child is fearful, angry, frustrated, etc.? Is the author suggesting that is the way for a child to manage their emotions?
I am returning this book. There are really good books to help kids learn ways to manage situations where they are fussy, angry, sad, frustrated, etc., such as “B is for Breathe”.

Wish anger was handled better

I bought this book to read to my struggling 3 yr old. As a lover of psychology, I know he is simply in a stage of development and needs a little more scaffolding.
However, having been married to an addict, the idea of "I'll be nice and your anger will disappear" is harmful. Being nice to an abusive person won't stop the cycle. A soft answer can turn away wrath, so to speak, but it is easily mistaken for taking responsibility for another's emotions and choices. When I read it, I modify it.
Beautiful book in other aspects!

Perfect for teaching emotional intelligence

We love this book! My three-year-old loves pointing out which emotion is on which page.
Happiness, sadness, angry, fear, calm, and LOVED! There are 4 pages dedicated to each emotion. UPDATE: 7 months later and my son is at the stage of choosing appropriate colors to convey certain art. We used crayons to depict different feelings via colors and pictures the other day and he chose every color/emotion so appropriately and it’s in large thanks to THIS book!! He chose black for fear, red for anger, yellow for happy, red for loved, etc.. it’s a wonderful socio-emotional intelligence book!
