“Together, the words and pictures work seamlessly to deliver a powerful message: What we do matters.”—R. J. Palacio, The New York Times
When the news reports are flooded with tales of hatred and fear, a girl asks her papa what she can do to make the world a better place. “Come with me,” he says. Hand-in-hand, they walk to the subway, tipping their hats to those they meet. The next day, the girl asks her mama what she can do—her mama says, “Come with me,” and together they set out for the grocery, because one person doesn’t represent an entire race or the people of a land. After dinner that night, the little girl asks if she can do something of her own—walk the dog . . . and her parents let her go. “Come with me,” the girl tells the boy across the hall. Walking together, one step at a time, the girl and the boy begin to see that as small and insignificant as their part may seem, it matters to the world.
In this lyrical and timely story, author Holly M. McGhee and illustrator Pascal Lemaître champion the power of kindness, bravery, and friendship in the face of uncertainty.

Teaching children to be way too trusting
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 9 September 2021Verified Purchase
I really wanted to love this book and I don’t feel good about writing a negative review because I do realize the author’s message of acceptance and tolerance is a good one, HOWEVER, I would feel worse not warning potential readers of this story about it’s strange message of encouraging children to venture outside without an adult/guardian. When I was a child, around 8, I did exactly what these two characters did, however, I was alone walking my dog without parent supervision, but with parent permission. To make a long scary story short, a very “nice” (terrible man) stranger lured me to an alley, and by pure luck I got away and made it safely home to my parents. I missed the return deadline so I have this book I won’t read to my four year old daughter.

I feel I have traveled back in time and I don't like what I see
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 30 September 2017Verified Purchase
Wow...a powerful testament to being brave and helping each other. The world has been a topsy turvy place lately. I don't recognize my country at times. I feel I have traveled back in time and I don't like what I see. But then I read a book like this, and I know there is goodness in the world. There are people just like me, who refuse to live afraid or to allow hate to win. Come with me...we can make this world better together. Beautiful message, lovely book.

This is a great book to address fear and how we should "stay the course" when bad things happen to us. it also is helpful in showing that the little things we do make a great impact on others and hence a great impact on the world. Check the author's blog for the backstory on how the book came about. I highly recommend it.

It is fine, but did not live up to the hype
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 28 June 2018Verified Purchase
I heard rave reviews and bought it without actually reading it myself first. It is fine, but did not live up to the hype. Simple and to the point, so it is probably good for kids who are stressed and scared.
