Using Your New Water Bottle
Chill out. When figuring out what to fill your brand new water bottle with, steer clear of hot drinks and stick with cold liquids only.
Under pressure. When you're on a flight or taking a summer road trip, pressure builds up in your water bottle due to altitude or really hot temperatures. In these situations, twist the water bottle lid open a little bit to relieve that pressure, then reseal the lid before you use it.
Do's and don'ts. We don't recommend carrying filled water bottles in your bag while on-the-go (it's safer for your cell phone this way). Also, keep your water bottle out of the microwave and the freezer.
Clean up. Contigo water bottles and lids are top-rack dishwasher safe for a quick, easy clean. Visit our official website for more care and use information.

I ran into a major issue the first time I ran the lid through the dishwasher. The smell of the dish-washing detergent clung strongly to the mouth piece! Every time I took a sip my nose was being assaulted by a fake lemon detergent smell (literally made me gag).
First, I tried hand washing the lid and inside the mouth piece using antibacterial dish soap, hot water, and a straw cleaning brush... that just replaced one fake citrus scent with another.
Second, I tried soaking it in a solution of hot water and baking soda overnight... still no luck getting rid of the smell.
Finally I tried letting it soak in white vinegar for a couple of hours, then rinsing with COLD water. That did the trick. No lingering smells, not even the vinegar!
Cold or lukewarm water is they key; I only learned this after doing a bit of Googling and seeing an article about getting the smell out of Ziploc containers. Apparently hot water contributes to making the smell cling to the plastic!
I would still recommend this product overall, but I wish they had a warning about this and didn't label the lid as dishwasher safe. I will definitely be hand washing the lid from here on out. I hope this information helps other buyers!
Identified the problem, it is the silicone part below the spout, circled in red in the picture. You can fix it if you push down on it before taking a sip, but it appears to come loose on the opening of the spout, not the closing, so you have to push every time you open the spout. Its a tight area so I need to use a tool to reach it, not desirable.
I would buy another one of these if I weren't afraid this would happen again. There is no visible damage to the silicone or plastic.
First review :
I love this water bottle. I got the 24 ounce one so it would fit in my car cup. It is plenty large enough since I refill about four times a day. I don’t think I would want it any bigger also because of the weight. I put water in it and shook it hard in every direction and it does not leak. Another reviewer said that when you pop the straw up you are going to get a little spray in your face. She was right about that. But it’s easily dealt with. I just hold the straw down with my index finger while I push the button and then let the straw come up slowly and all is good. Still one-handed. Materials are not cheap. Plastic is thick and it’s well constructed. Generally a very good purchase for the price.
I wasn't sure if I would like the straw aspect (having to suck the water up as opposed to tipping the bottle up like drinking out of a glass), but it's really nice when you're in the car, because you can take a drink out of it without blocking any of your view with the bottle. The parts have all held up well being washed in the top rack of the dishwasher, but I do use a small brush to clean inside the mouthpiece area to help prevent mold. I have flown with it - unscrew the lid just slightly to release pressure before taking a drink out of it while in the air, otherwise water might spew out when you flip the spout up (not that I would know anything about that).
I liked the bottle enough that I ended up ordering a second one (the bigger 40 oz size).
The only downside this water bottle has is the auto spout. When you press the button, the spout will attack you with water or whatever drink you have inside it. It doesn't leak, it just throws out whatever is left in the spout (not the straw.) It's like throwing the last drops of water that's left on your hands right after washing them. I just use my thumb to slowly open it after pressing the button, no problem :-). I'm not sure if anyone else will experience this, it could just be my water bottle.
I'm very happy that I purchased this water bottle and I recommend it to anyone that just needs a water bottle or even needs one for traveling! :-)
