I bought this to play fighting games/2D games and the D-PAD is as worst as the JoyCons can be. It doesnt click.. the best D-PAD like the xblx one controller or the Saturn would have been great. Otherwise no point in buying. I dont why Nintendo never released one that is like the psvita. I never disconnect the Joycons.. its a gimmick and no one I know does.
Originally I was happy with it. My official Joycon had issues that I couldn't fix so I just replaced it for portable mode with the Hori controller as it was a lot cheaper than buying another Joycon. It was fine for about 5 months but now it seems to have become loose around the connection slider... I can't hold it now without it making a clicking sound and I can feel it being pressed into the switch from the side. Super annoying! The Nintendo Joycon on the right side is still perfect durability. You get what you pay for I guess.
I'm disappointed in Hori! I buy a lot of their stuff and this is the first time I was let down by them!
EDIT: Increased my original rating from 2-stars to 4-stars because it's actually held up really well with extensive use over the last 2 years! I sort of got used to the previously mentioned defects. Would still prefer it to feel more solid and durable but I definitely got my money's worth just out of pure use so far!
Ok, so I'll be up front with it, this thing is only recommended if you predominantly play your Switch in handheld mode, and mostly for 2d games. It's not a joycon, doesn't work wirelessly and will not work with a docked system. If that's not a problem for you, you'll love this thing. The directional pad feels about inline with an old-school snes controller, so it uses a membrane and doesn't click, but even so the membrane feels high quality and has much better precision than the four clicky buttons that the base joycon has. Overall I'd recommend this thing if you need a way to play switch games in handheld mode with a directional pad.
I really wanted to like this. It seems like the perfect solution for playing games that demand a proper d-pad while on the go, but the positioning just kills it. Its very uncomfortable to hold since the d-pad sits so low. You really have to position your hand at a weird angle. If they had reversed the positions of the analogue stick and the d-pad it would be perfect. Purchasing a separate switch grip might help some, but what drew me to this in the first place was the low cost. I'm not ready to spend more money.
The d-pad itself is very responsive and the build quality feels very good. If you can find a comfortable way to position your hands you will probably have no issues. I already found the switch to be uncomfortable in hand held mode, and this just makes it worse.
I really wasn't sure this would be so much better than the original Joy-Cons for classic games (and others like Dead Cells and Steamworld Dig) but it really does make the experience better. The build quality is nice, but obviously lighter as it has no batteries. This is not a problem when playing on the Switch as you don't feel it as easily. The one bothersome point is that the R and ZR buttons do not feel or 'click' the same way as the official Joy-Cons which makes them feel unbalanced. It's not bad, just different, and you will probably forget about it when playing. Overall a great addition to the Switch!
This is by far the best dpad for the Nintendo Switch, and its maybe even better than the one on the pro controller. It doesn't click like the default left joycon, which is great, plus the accuracy is amazing.
It's true that it doesn't have Bluetooth or a battery but it's also a bit lighter and is perfect for playing handheld fighting games or really any game.
