Espresso Tamping is an art that is often neglected in espresso preparation.
The goal is to create a pellet of coffee through which the hot water from the espresso machine will penetrate evenly.
Since the water from the espresso machine is under pressure, the espresso pellet must be hard and evenly tamped.
The water only knows how to go from a region of high pressure to a region of low pressure.
Therefore it is important to prevent paths of least resistance in the coffee pellet and force the water to evenly permeate and extract the coffee.
Used either in conjunction with a dobboco tampresso (flat tamper) or with any other 58mm tamper,
SMKF distressso tool helps baristas of all levels in pursuit of consistent espresso perfection.
This height is adjustable, suit different baskets, so we wish from our products, you can enjoy your coffee time.

Mathematicians make coffee into theorems, they say.
This leveler, a knockoff of a $180 one, works very well.
Unless you have spent a few years as a barista and can level by hand and tamper with uniform pressure perfectly perpendicular, use this one.
Adjust the height once, so that it rests on the rim of the portafilter cup with tampered coffee.
You don't have to press, its own weight suffices. Forget the tamper.
Make a few turns backwards, to distribute the coffee level, and then spin it forward...
After two months now. I like it even more...
I have a bottomless portafilter and would notice channeling and uneven extraction from time to time. Maybe it was time to take a look at my tamping technique? After doing some research, I became convinced that a leveler could be the solution. I decided to look for an affordable option, as a $100+ leveler seems ridiculous and out of my budget.
I’m happy to say this thing is well-made, easy to adjust, and does what it says. I start by stirring the grounds in the ports filter with a chopstick, then use the leveler instead of a tamper to smooth and level the coffee bed. My extractions over the last few days have been perfectly even, and I feel like there’s a noticeable difference in the cup. Highly recommended.
In making Espresso eliminating as many variables as possible makes achieving a great shot more doable. This device makes distributing an even bed of coffee much easier. Weigh your dose, level the dose without compaction and then tamp for the perfect shot. Consistent!
The piston has 3 gradually ramped faces. The piston is threaded as is the lock ring and cap. Loosen lock ring and cap to adjust piston to level and make uniform the layer of grounds. Lock them all in place by tightening cap to lock ring while holding the piston.
Weigh your dose, sweep with leveler and tamp the perfect shot.
