- How does it work? Digestive enzymes are produced by the pancreas and secreted into the duodenum (upper small intestine) where proteins, carbohydrates, and fats are broken down prior to absorption. The body's capacity to produce enzymes may decline with age. Moreover, stress and other unhealthy lifestyle factors may impact enzyme production. Supplementation with the enzymes in Best Digestive Enzymes supports replenishment of the body's enzyme levels, promoting healthy digestion and delivery of vital nutrients to the body. Maintenance of healthy digestion not only helps with occasional gastrointestinal discomfort, but also supports the very integrity of the intestinal mucosa. Additionally, enzymes may enhance healthy bacterial balance in the bowel by lessening the accumulation of undigested foods in the large intestine.
- Why should I take Doctor’s Best Digestive Enzymes? Doctor’s Best Digestive Enzymes offers a complete set of enzymes to support your body’s digestion of carbohydrates, fiber, protein and fats. This is a comprehensive set of enzymes that include: Support for Carbohydrate and Fiber Digestion Alpha-galactosidase – An enzyme that facilitates the breakdown of carbohydrates such as raffinose and stachyose. This enzyme is especially helpful in supporting the digestion of raw vegetables and beans. Amylase – This enzyme functions to break down carbohydrates such as starch and glycogen, a storage form of glucose. Beta-glucanase – An important enzyme that facilitates the digestion of beta-linked glucose bonds associated with whole grains such as barley, oats and wheat. Cellulase – This enzyme helps free the nutrients found in both fruits and vegetables by breaking down cellulose, a plant fiber. Glucoamylase – This enzyme complements the function of hemicellulase by breaking down polysaccharides from plants. Hemicellulase – This enzyme assists in the breakdown of carbohydrates and is most useful for enhancing the efficiency of polysaccharide digestion from plant foods. Invertase – This enzyme facilitates the breakdown of carbohydrates and is especially effective at helping to digest sucrose, common table sugar. Lactase – This enzyme is necessary for the proper utilization and digestion of lactose, the predominant sugar found in milk and other dairy products. Phytase – This enzyme breaks down plant carbohydrates and is especially helpful at breaking down phytic acid found in leafy vegetables. Because this enzyme breaks down phytic acid, it frees the minerals in plants and aids in their absorption. Xylanase – This enzyme is a sub-type of hemicellulase and functions to break down soluble fiber from food sources. Support for Protein Digestion Bromelain - An enzyme that is derived from pineapple, this nutrient also facilitates the digestion of proteins. Bromelain has also been associated with a wide range of diverse health benefits of its own. Papain – This enzyme is derived from papaya and serves to enhance the digestion of proteins, facilitating nutrient absorption. Protease – This enzyme supports the digestion of protein, breaking them into absorbable units of amino acids, the building blocks for the body’s regenerative purposes. Support for Fat Digestion Lipase – The main enzyme that functions to break down lipids and improve fat utilization. In this capacity, it supports the function of the gall bladder. Beneficial Micro-Organisms Bacillus subtilis – Supplementing with this important probiotic organism promotes a healthy bacterial balance in the intestines. Probiotic organisms have been researched for their ability to support healthy immune function, efficient digestion and the general health and well-being of the digestive tract.

Why take Digestive Enzymes?
How does it work?
Digestive Enzymes for a Healthier Digestive System!
Social engagements, family gatherings, and holiday seasons, often display an abundance of opportunities for over-indulgence. If you are like me, trying to maintain healthy digestive function at these events can be challenging especially if the foods that are served are not necessarily the healthiest. But there is a way to keep our digestive system healthy despite all these food temptations. One of the easiest and most effective way is to supplement with digestive enzymes.
Our body naturally produces the digestive enzymes needed to break down the food we eat into basic nutrient components such as amino acids, fatty acids and simple sugars. Without digestive enzymes, the food will sit in the stomach, and we would not be able to extract nutrients and energy from it. While our body normally produces the digestive enzymes necessary to keep our digestive system in check, in some cases, we may be exposed to various factors that can adversely affect their production (illness, age, external factors, antibiotics, etc.).
Supplementing our diet with digestive enzymes may be the best and simple way to promote healthy digestion, especially under less-than-ideal situations. Keep in mind that although each digestive enzyme secreted by our gut and other organs have a specific role, they all contribute to keep a healthy and well-balanced digestive system. So, if you want to help maintain a healthy digestive function with the help of digestive enzymes supplementation, you must check the label and verify that the supplement your buy contains most of the crucial digestive enzymes scientifically known to have a positive impact on food digestion.
Below is a non-exhaustive list of essential digestive enzymes your dietary supplement should contain to have a positive health impact:
Alpha-Galactosidase, Amylase, Cellulase, Glucoamylase, Invertase, Hemicellulase, Lactase, Lipase, Peptidase, and Protease
Doctor’s Best Digestive Enzymes contains the above digestive enzymes plus other great components for supporting healthy digestive system. Exclusively formulated with a full-spectrum high potency digestive enzyme blend, Doctor’s Best Digestive Enzymes provides a unique dietary supplement to afford optimal support for healthy digestion and optimal gut health.*

I also used D-limonene (Jarrow) to help completely resolve the acid reflux and wean myself off prilosec and acid reducers for good. I then added licorice root (Nature's Way), aloe vera (NOW), and slippery elm (NOW) as coating and soothing supplements to allow my GI tract to heal, and these also further help with the reflux and digestion as the inflammation is reduced. I added L-glutamine (Jarrow) which directly coats the enterocytes and nourishes them to heal the tight junctions to begin to resolve the " leaky gut". I am going through and listing all of this in case it helps someone else who has more severe problems than probiotics and digestive enzymes alone can resolve, to give you suggestions and hope.
All the suggestions I have made are useful for almost any problem with acid reflux, heartburn, GERD, IBS, or any other more serious GI problem, such as Celiac disease or Chrohn's or Ulcerative Colitis, or others with "leaky gut", which is often also linked to autoimmune disease (I have Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis). Try good probiotics like Hyperbiotics "perfect probiotic" PRO-15 time release pearls, and good broad spectrum digestive enzymes like these by Dr's Best first, and then if that isn't enough, research and consider some of the other supplements I have been using with good success. The more complex your problem, the less likely unfortunately it will be that one or two things alone will be enough, so don't give up on the digestive enzymes as they are some of the most important supplements for any GI disease, along with the probiotics. Any GI disorder, structural or functional, is affecting your digestion and absorption of nutrients, and keeping you from being healthy no matter what you eat, and good strong broad spectrum supplemental digestive enzymes are the cure for that. Even though it takes many months to heal intestinal hyperpermeability, during which time I personally intend to continue to take all of the supplements I mentioned, I think anyone with any kind of GI issue should take good probiotics and digestive enzymes, and consider Betaine Hcl. HIghly recommend these enzymes and taking some form of digestive enzymes for the long term. I plan to always take a Hyperbiotics probiotic and a good digestive enzyme, even once I am healthy again. I may try different digestive enzymes by NOW, digestive ultimate or platinum, only because they have several more digestive enzymes and higher potency, than even these by Dr.;s Best, but they are a little more expensive. Highly recommend!!
1- Do NOT drink water within 30 minutes of eating (before or after you eat)
2- Completely STOP chewing gum (it makes you swallow air)
3- Digestive Enzymes
Now, it's okay to have a sip of water to take mediation, etc. but do not drink a lo with food as it dilutes the natural digesting enzymes in your stomach. I did a lot of research and found Doctor's Best to have one of the largest variety of enzymes, and highest potency. Since I was having severe issues, I thought what d oI have to lose? I take 1-3 pills depending on what or how much I ate, with every meal, and follow the other guidelines diligently, and my bloating is gone!!! Everyone of my friends have noticed, my clothes fit better, pants are too big on me now! I couldn't be happier that I found these, and if you are having digestive issues, i URGE you to give this a shot!!!
