"A must read for parents, educators, and people with dyslexia." -Gordon F. Sherman, Ph.D., Past-President International Dyslexia Association
Revised and updated edition with groundbreaking scientific insights and eighteen new profiles of individuals with dyslexia forthcoming in February 2023: https://bit.ly/DArevised
Did you know that many successful architects, lawyers, engineers—even bestselling novelists—had difficulties learning to read and write as children? In this groundbreaking book, Brock and Fernette Eide explain how 20% of people—individuals with dyslexia—share a unique learning style that can create advantages in a classroom, at a job, or at home. Using their combined expertise in neurology and education, the authors show how these individuals not only perceive the written word differently but may also excel at spatial reasoning, see insightful connections that others simply miss, understand the world in stories, and display amazing creativity. Blending personal stories with hard science, The Dyslexic Advantage provides invaluable advice on how parents, educators, and individuals with dyslexia can recognize and use the strengths of the dyslexic learning style in: material reasoning (used by architects and engineers); interconnected reasoning (scientists and designers), narrative reasoning (novelists and lawyers); and dynamic reasoning (economists and entrepreneurs.)
With prescriptive advice and inspiring testimonials, this paradigm-shifting book proves that dyslexia doesn’t have to be a detriment, but can often become an asset for success.

great descritions of the positive aspects
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 13 February 2017Verified Purchase
Very insightful, great descritions of the positive aspects, but no clear guidance on how to improve on the challenges, however, very much helps to articulate how I as a a 43 year old recently diaganosied SPLD/Dyslexic, has always "felt" and "thought". Makes you feel, if it can be articulated then you can find teh soloutions you need or want, overall a great book to give you a bit of a boost of confidence, recommend for any parents of children who have been given this diagnosis, and the kids themsleves ( hey kids, you have hidden superpowers and Leonardo Da Vinci,Einstein and prbably Tony Stark are on your team ;0)) and of course for any fellow adults out there that have been diagnosed in later life. All in all us Dyslexics are in some great company and have really amaizng and unique talents, go us ;0) Good luck to everyone,

Great but needs editing, needs diagrams
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 25 April 2022Verified Purchase
Excellent book, lets itself down due to lack of editing. The same point is repeated so many times in the first half, it is arduous to read. As a dyslexic reader, for this reason, I made it half way though and didn't manage to continue further. Diagrams of the physical structure of the brain were absent, which would have been helpful to visualise the descriptions. It also seemed to suggest that dyslexia is the opposite of autism (in terms of the brain structure that gives each) and so a person can not be both, which appears not to be the case in life. It also seemed to suggest that autistics are not creative, which also appears not to be the case in life.

Recommended for Dyslexics
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 22 September 2018Verified Purchase
As I'm dyslexic myself, I bought this book and read it, found out what hidden potentials I have that people without dyslexia don't and uncovered which careers or jobs would suit me or which jobs I could excel at and use my strengths or dyslexic potential. I recommend the book to the people who have dyslexia and to the people who have a family member or to the people who are generally interested in dyslexia. The knowledge provided in the book would be also beneficial in schools.

Recommend 100%

We are just in the beginning of reading through this book, which was recommended to us via another parent. As we are sharing one book, my partner has read a fair bit more than I have, however as he is some one who doesn’t read anything unless it’s about his hobbies, he has found this book to be an easy read, super informative and has got him thinking. I look forward to reading the book too, so between us we would highly recommend.

Excellent pro-active Guide to making the most of life as a dyslexic.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 18 November 2015Verified Purchase
I've just finished reading this book and it's superb. It gives clear explanations of what dyslexia is and how the dyslexic brain differs from others. It then explains how the structural differences can be an immense advantage and how to recognise and harness those advantages. There is clear guidance I the fact that our brains are plastic and, whilst we can't change the dyslexia, we can make enormous progress by using early intervention.
