To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we do not use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only book needed regarding textile

This book is a very informative and detailed book. It has everything you need referencing textiles. Definitely a book for anyone in fashion school or in the fashion industry. The pictures in the book are an extra reward. With each textile the book will have a picture of a garment made from that textile.

It got me through a class, where as the instructor had no idea the differences in textile. One week a fabric was a polyester(blend) and the next it was a rayon(blend) or cotton. Sometimes she changed her mind in the same day. I am still using it today.

Brief details of the book: Fabric production, fabric waste, how textiles are made, manmade versus natural, charts in the back summarizing fabric textile and how they are produced, whether it is a top/bottom or medium weight, what garments can be used with each textile, advantages and disadvantages, other names for the fabrics, whether it is weave or weft, single knit/double knit, selvage, PFD textiles preparing for dyeing (but it is brief/not the book for learning how to dye textiles)

The Fashion Designer's TEXTILE DIRECTORY by Gail Baugh

Among the two-dozen books I have purchased this year to get a feel for the clothing industry, BARRON's profusely illustrated title of >300 pp in 8" x 9.5" format is faultless for design, construction, production, and content. It could be made larger and more expensive to include everything known about every fabric ever made for every purpose, but it cannot be made more useful for cutters and stitchers needing a compendium of the fabrics currently available. And the colourful illustrations enable readers to identify the textiles on sight.

Ms. Baugh explains how each fabric is made, of what it is made, for what it is used, how it is worked, and the care it needs, with illustrations of the styles most suitable. She groups materials as staples, specialties, luxuries, and ornamental, natural and synthetic. She emphasizes the collateral effects that manufacture and disposal makes on the global environment and the conditions of the people who work in the industry.

Paradoxically, a perfect work of art, utility, and responsibility leaves nothing to say for review. This book is literally awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive, go-to textbook of modern fabrics and their unique qualities!

Gorgeous book, superbly organized and arranged and written, giving near-encyclopedic insight into the nature of modern fabrics, how they're built, dyed, printed, and what unique qualities each possesses so you get an idea of how each can give voice to the fashion styles you'd like to design and construct. A real definitive, go-to textbook of value to all fashion designers and textile workers. This volume does not contain cloth swatches, but I think one can obtain theme in a companion volume somewhere (?) Being a very modern, savvy book, the author wishes to pay particular attention to sustainability, frequently describing what environmental collateral pitfalls can occur with the manufacture of these fabrics; I personally am a little bored by these modern PC niceties in the text, but perhaps I shouldn't be. Highly recommended to those at all levels in the fashion and textile industry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Organized, well laid out book with great visual references and photos.

Organized, well laid out book with great visual references and photos. My only criticism to drop the book to 4 stars instead of 5 stars is a wish for a list of 'what fabrics are appropriate to what printing method...' hopefully that oversight will be corrected in future editions. I was suprised by the fact that there are only 2 pages in the book devoted to the subject of printing fabric and automated methods. What is great about this book is that there are over 130 different fabrics, fabric treatments, trims or decorative techniques listed plus a section on knits. Each individual listing Is given 1 or 2 pages each with examples (usually 3), plus a photo of models wearing clothing in that particular fabric. The fabric information is broken down into; distinctive features, strengths, weaknesses and usual fiber content. This book runs to 320 pgs. Well worth the initial investment.

OMG this book is fabulous. I have over 20yrs in Retail Buying, Product Design, and Development (all types of apparel as well as non-apparel) and have been in zillions of mills and factories all over. Very well illustrated and explained. Even touches on the production timeline from concept to delivery (this is the only area that lacks real depth but is not the focus of the book to begin with so it is expected). From a fabric knowledge perspective, I will be requiring my new hires to read this (designers, product managers, graphic designers, QA/QC, etc as well as the Buyers and Planners) Everyone involved in the apparel industry should read this including retail Merchant teams so they fully understand this very important aspect of their business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Designers and Especially for Those Who are using Green Fabrics

I am a new designer and have been looking for a book that not only describes the myriad of fabric choices one could use but also takes into consideration the impact that producing these fabrics have on the planet...this book is a fabulous reference not only for newbies to the industry..but even for experienced designers who are interested in True Green processes and fabrics...Gail Baugh not only writes with an intuitive style for the designer (answering questions that i had not even thought of asking) but also cuts through all the "merchandising hype" on green and really explains how to intelligently choose fabric manufactures who practice true sustainability. It is hard to find a better book out there that discusses the fundamentals of design and the impact that fabric choices have on the resulting garment as well on the planet that we all live on!! A must read for all designers, especially if you plan on incorporating "Green fabric design" into your line!

This book couldn't have come at a better time for me. I really needed something comprehensive for a beginner but detailed enough for an intermediate person to grasp. I'd highly recommend for anyone who wants to be a designer to study fabric more and this book is a great place to start. I was recommended this book by Zoe Hong's youtube channel and it does not disappoint!

I LOVE to sew...I've been sewing for almost 30 years now and i work in a fabric store. Where was this book 20 years ago? I think my most favorite part is how the making of fabric affects the enviroment. WOW!! Anyone who is wanting to know anything about the cloth they are wearing or sewing should buy this book!!.. All sewing teachers should have this book. All those who love fabric as much as I do should have this book in their library. I couldn't put it down. It's well written and part is is text book form and the other reads like a dictionary but with pretty fabric samples all over the pages. You will not be disappoited! Happy sewing!!
