When I first unboxed it I struggled with it for a second because I thought just the little orange collar twisted to lock it, and it wouldn't budge. After I realized to lock and unlock it you need to grab firmly on both pieces (tool and extending handle) and twist, and the harder you twist builds more friction, I never had a problem once using this.
I can say for sure that this issue is people not twisting the handle enough, which granted, they could make that clearer or make it have a grippier surface or "click" or something, but it 100% totally works, used it for hours today, great tool.
This cultivator on the other hand, is a disappointment, and all due to its locking mechanism, which sadly, has been brought up by many other reviewers and I should have listened to.
Since this is telescoping unit, meant to be easily put away without taking much space, it must be extended and locked in place before each use. One simply extends it, then at the middle of the unit, a simple twist locks it in place....NOT so well I'm afraid. I can't even count how many times I started to rake the soil, only to have the freaking lock disengage, causing the cultivator to collapse to its storage position. This is a constant problem, so much that I simply quit using it.
I ended up drilling a hole through the center and used a nut & bolt to lock the unit, which of course, means it can't be collapsed anymore, unless I remove the bolt.
Other than that, it is well made with some good materials. The blades are strong enough to loosen dirt on patchy lawns and it feels durable enough. It's just shame the lock is such a poor executed design/idea. Good luck.
