This solar panel is great. Folded up it’s about the surface size of an iPad and 1-1.75 inches thick depending on whether you measure the little junction box sticking out or just the depth of the panels. It’s under 3 lbs which keeps it plenty portable but you will still notice it in your backpack. 3lbs is definitely light enough and even though you can find slightly smaller, lighter panels here’s why you probably shouldn’t:

It isn’t always sunny. Even if you only aim to get 20 watts to fast charge a mid-tier power bank it’s great to have the surface area to catch up to 40w in ideal conditions because as the term implies, you often won’t be in that setting. There are going to be some rainy days were it’s inconvenient to get anything at all which is just a fact of life with small solar panels. But with ~4ft and 40w of solar capability, this can easily keep you going on cloudy days too. As long as it isn’t a total wash out and you can see a bit of blue sky somewhere this 40w panel will still catch 8-10 watts through some pretty serious clouds. A nice day with a clear view of bright sun will get you 33-38w and you can plug along at full speed, but those days when thick clouds won’t stay out of your way you can still catch a decent charge just getting 20-30% of the max input. Plus once the sun comes out and you get some direct access to sunlight you’re off to the races.

I'm on a 2-month wilderness trail trek. I use this to keep a 20k MaH battery charged, and use that to recharge a number of crucial devices such as a UV light for water sterilization, headlamp, phone (GPS! Movies!), and a commercial vidcam. So far, in summer, and in mountains and desert, it's been painless and fairly quick to keep the battery charged, a few hours on a rest-in-camp day, and occasionally charge the devices themselves. The 15-watt rating seems honest, I had a Big Blue fabric-covered solar charger advertised as 21 watts that didn't charge things as well or as quickly, and unlike this one it wouldn't reset itself after a power fluctuation, so on cloudy days or with "dumb" or smaller-battery devices you often had to unplug everything and let the panel reset. Plus that fabric, and the joints between them, became worn pretty quickly and the fabric tore, sometimes even exposing wiring, and loose "hinges" (just folds, really) made positioning it and standing it up for use a real pain.

This has no fabric, and no raised rims to the solar cells, it's entirely laminated, with shiny transparent plastic on the cell side making it a single surface, and the other side is a hard, durable dark and textured material. It is a tremendous leap forward, but be careful, even that protective plastic can get scratches, or clouded by cleaning solvents.

The only real problem is the anchoring points you would use to hang it from a backpack are just holes in the corners, leaving a thin strip of material as the only support, and they become easily deformed when they're actually used for their ostensible purpose, and I have stopped hanging it from them for fear of tearing. The "hinges" between panels are the same, thin strips of the base material. So far they remain okay, sufficiently stiff to maintain all three panels in approximately the same plane but it's an obvious possible failure point.

The USB housing is solid, and durably anchored to the hard material on the back. The controls are simple-- a red light on one side of the USB socket indicates a good sunlight exposure, and a green light on the other side indicates a solid connection with whatever you're charging. If the connection is so-so that light is blue, and if the device is not connected properly it stays dark (or if it's an old-fashioned "dumb" device like my headlamp. Check the the thing itself that you're charging, it might still be getting current).

Overall I would give this a high "good " rating but not excellent. There are cheaper panels, much lighter panels, more durable panels, and more productive panels. BUT IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO GET TOO MANY OF THOSE CHARACTERISTICS AT ONCE, and this directly hits "the sweet spot" on some things, comes close on others, and IS NOT SUPER EXPENSIVE. In car terms, this is not a Rolls or a Maserati, but it is definitely a good solid Chevy or a Toyota. It may not be expedition-level durable, as I can already see a little bit of wear from daily use, but it's certainly good for the occasional trip to the beach or for the family to take to the mountains on a weekend, or for the emergency kit in the trunk of your car.

Improvements? I would suggest looking at reinforcement of the strips between the panels, and eliminate
the holes in the corners for hanging it and imbed loops in the plastic instead, and think about rubber plugs to close the USB port to dust and moisture.

But if this is the kind of thing you're looking for, this one definitely gets very high marks. Not the absolute highest, but it's also inexpensive.
For purposes like mine I believe it is a consumable item that will have to be replaced regularly, but for most people it would be durable goods. Personally? I'd
say if you're in the market for this kind of thing, buy THIS one.

This charger is built to be very durable and is built using high quality monocrystalline cells which means the cells are more efficient and work better at temperature extremes. I really like the construction of this charger, it is stiff enough to hold it's shape when you want to stand it up or lean it, and flexible enough to drape over curved tent, car, etc. The charge controller seems very smart about turning off and on when enough light is available and also I appreciate the led to show when it's charging. The charger is lightweight and folds down to a nice size for stowing in backpack or briefcase. I used the charger to charge my backup battery or directly charge my phone.

The sun is the main challenge with solar chargers - you often need to be creative to place panels to get the most light, and this charger has eyelets at the corners for anchoring with carabiners, cords, etc, so I'm always able to find a good position to maximize the charging. I used the charger while on a motorcycle camping trip and was able to use the tent or the bike to hold the charger, and I was able to strap it over my tailbag to charge while riding.

I also appreciate that there is no battery - I prefer to keep the battery separate since then I can choose what battery to bring or just charge my devices directly. Also these panels should last much longer than the battery cells would.

Solar panels represent an endless supply of power. As long as the sun shines - and we are not foolish enough to nuke the sun (see the Matrix) - its power can be harnessed through solar panels. For years I had been waiting for solar panels that would be a truly viable alternative to electricity. That day has arrived. This solar panel is efficient, and really works. It charges my devises effortlessly, even in less than optimal situations. This will accompany on my camping trips and travels to developing countries. It will also be a companion to my Anker 521 portable power station, for emergencies during power outages. My only gripe is that at time of purchase only the 10W, 15W and 40W versions were available. The sweet spot would have been between 20W-30W. The 10W-15W versions are a bit underpowered and would be ideal mainly for cellphones and tablets. It only comes with a USB-C connector. The 40W version, while having a small form factor when folded, is too lengthy when spread out to be truly portable. But it does add two more connnectors: a DC connector and the older USB connector. It would have also been nice to have ”legs” to angle the panel towards the sun, as opposed to merely spreading it out on a flat surface or hanging it by its grommets. The sun is not always directly overhead. Still, the minimalistic form factor of this solar panel as well its impressive output makes it the best that I have seen so far. I was impressed enough that having acquired the 15W version, I have also bought the 40W version.

Update: While I am quite impressed with the 15W version, I haven't been with the 40W so far. The maximum wattage I've derived from it is 20W. Of course, since it is much longer and doesn't have any stand for angling it more precisely to the sun, optimal positioning is more difficult, so this could be somewhat my fault. I'll post as I experiment more with it. I am also disappointed that it does not come with any kind of corded charger. The DC connector is not commonly found, and it would have been nice if one was included, or if they made one.
