Product description

Colour:Silver

The Flirc Raspberry Pi case was designed to not only be functional for your Raspberry Pi, but to be drop dead gorgeous. It's made of beautiful aluminum core that is sandwiched between two black, soft touch shells that feel amazing in your hands. But once it's out of your hands, it's deserving to be proudly on display running your favorite media center software. This is the first affordable Raspberry Pi case made out of aluminum. We wanted to ensure we didn't sacrifice form over function, so we used the aluminum housing of the case to provide a built in heat sink. Supplied with the case is a thermal pad and 4 screws for the simplest Raspberry Pi case assembly on the market. It only takes seconds to drop your Raspberry Pi into it's amazing new home and show it off on your counter top. We included rubber feet to raise the enclosure so it just hovers underneath your television. In addition to the built in heat sink, small ventilation slots on the bottom help keep the Raspberry Pi cool. GPIO pins are accessible through the slot on the bottom of the case and there is no need for disassembly to get to the SD card. We know you will love the attention to detail we put in throughout the case. What's New: New manufacturing process with improved design, heatsink fits directly over pi3 CPUi, SD card now easily accessible on the pi3, LED Lights now visible with the pi3

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Case!! Thermal Results Below!!!
Reviewed in the United States on 29 July 2017
I loved the Gen 1 Flirc Case (made for rpi2) and had to get this upgrade when I saw it!

I love the new finished product!

Here are the improvements over the Gen1 Case:
* It is slightly shorter
* Better access to the SD card
* Bigger (and properly placed) heatsink
* Better ventilation at the bottom (holes rather than slits)
* Defined cutouts for the USB ports and Ethernet
* Solid feel in the hand

I replaced the thermal pad that came with the case with a Fujipoly Ultra Extreme XR-m Thermal Pad (17.0 W/mK) for better thermal conductivity from the CPU to the case/heatsink. I used the 1.5 size and it fits really snug which I like.

Below are stress tests that I ran with CPU Burn (the most stressful test for a CPU) at the normal 1.2GHz clockspeed.

Case + Fujipoly CPU Burn Stress Test
* Starts at 34.3C
* Finished 15mins at 63.4C

Case + Fujipoly + Fan (Pushing Air Into Case) CPU Burn Stress Test
* Starts at 34.3C
* Finished 15mins at 59.1C

Case + Fujipoly + Fan (Pulling Air Out) CPU Burn Stress Test
* Starts at 33.6C
* Finished 15mins at 56.9

All in all, I can say that I am extremely pleased with this case! No cons for me at all!
I would recommended this to everyone wanting to run retro gaming, media, etc. for long periods of time. Overclocking is also possible with this case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good looking case, effective at thermal management
Reviewed in the United States on 31 March 2018
I bought this to hold my Raspberry Pi 3 B Media Center for a couple of reasons. It looks quite good, and acts as a passive heat sink for the processor.

I run LibreElec on my Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, and connect to video, music, and image shares on my home network. As a result, when in use the Raspberry Pi works quite hard. Previously, I used only the small heat sinks that came with the kit. Every now and again I would get the "Overheat" icon. Since installing the RPi into this case, I haven't seen that icon. I can tell that the case is working because it gets warmer than if it isn't turned on. I periodically check the temperature in "Settings/System Information/Hardware". At idle, the RPi 3 B+ runs 106F (41.1C). The highest I've seen is about 130F (54.4C). With the standard case and heatsinks, it would occasionally get to about 170F (76.6C), and would throttle down the processor.

PROS:
+ Good looking case, looks quite commercial/professional.
+ Works very well to control temperature of the processor (see the 1337Ninja review of this item). This case uses passive cooling (silent) as opposed to active cooling (potentially noisy fans).
+ Reasonably easy assembly (see CONS below)
+ Reasonable cost.
+ Excellent access to all ports/connections (but see CONS below)

CONS:
- The case assembles around a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B quite well, and you are able to use the included thermal pad to maintain contact between the heat sink pillar on the case and the processor on the board. HOWEVER, you CANNOT use the pad with a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. The pad is too thick. The pillar seems to be the right length to use a thick consistency thermal paste INSTEAD OF the pad to make good contact with the processor on the RPi 3 B+. That's what I did, and so far it seems to work just fine.
- Difficult to see the status LEDS on the mainboard. However, if you are so inclined, it is possible to carefully file away some of the case in front of the LEDS so you can see them. See the attached photo.
- The GoBeavers review mentions that it isn't possible to fit standard 40 pin cable connectors to the GPIO bus on the board. It's true. I too tried just to see if it would work. For my purposes, it doesn't matter since I won't be connecting to the GPIO with my LibreElec system. I don't think this case would be a good choice for those who plan on using their systems for breadboarding. That being said, with a little hand work, it should be possible to fit a standard 40 pin cable connector and cable to RPi3s mounted in this case.

SYNOPSIS:
The CONS seem to overwhelm the PROS, but they are very minor compared to the benefits of this case.

This is a good looking, well designed case for the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B(+) series boards. It does all that is claimed, but has some very small, easily correctable issues. I have several other RPi3s and will purchase these cases for those RPi3s that aren't used for breadboarding. One huge benefit for me is the silence of the system when in use. There are no fans at all, hence no noise. I highly recommend this case.

1.0 out of 5 stars screws DONT go all the way in
Reviewed in the United States on 16 November 2018
The outer portion of the case is well made and beautiful, but the screws that come with the case dont go all the way in and the bottom part of the case is left loose, which is VERY DISAPPOINTING. I tried every singles screw that comes inside the package, both the ones in the 3B plus bag and 2/3 bag and none seem to work. i own a Raspberry Pi 3B+.
