Epic Fail - Does Not Remove All the Air

I bought this as a replacement for an old Food Saver unit which I used happily for almost 7 years before it gave up the ghost.

I am not happy with this system at all. The unit seems to vacuum the all the air out of the first bag, but fails miserably on subsequent attempts. Only 3/4 of the air is drawn out before the vacuum pump stops and the sealing process starts. I have to press the "Cancel" button before it can seal the bag and restart the vacuum process to draw out the remaining air. Total failure. Unfortunately I am past the return period. Needless to say, this unit is going in the trash and I'll try again.

After rather minimal usage, the 4840 only lasted 4 months beyond factory warranty. Just ordered another but this time I bought the extended warranty. Suggest same to anyone who may read this. UPDATE: Bought new 4840 and guess what, will not vacuum seal. Another lose of meat, sent first one back to factory. This one I am returning, however, it cost less than the meat I lost.

I debated a long time about whether or not a single person who does limited cooking really could justify one of these vacuum sealers. I have decided they make sense for single people who have no choice but to buy a larger quantity of meat or produce than they need, but it also makes sense for a large family who can economize by buying large quantities. For me, I can buy 1 or 2 pounds of beef, chicken or vegetables, portion it into single servings, and use it over months or even years for some foods. Haven't tried "sous vide" style cooking yet, but supposedly this machine with FoodSaver bags will work. This is not the highest-end model that FoodSaver offers, but it got good reviews on independent rating sites. Overall, I am satisfied with the ease of use and performance, and it may help me to resist the temptation to grab a frozen pizza at the grocery store if I have easy-to-prepare single portions of more nutritious food waiting at home. Do read the directions carefully!

I vacuum sealed 2 fillet mignons. I needed to clean the drip tray, & it would not pull out. I was told to use a butter knife & slide it across. Did not work. I prefer the older type without all of the bells & whistles. Just simply lift the lid, place bag over sealer, then place the lid down & seal!! Too many things to go wrong when they add all of the extras. My old foodsaver vacuum sealer lasted 8 years; NEVER any problems!!
