I'm a networking professional so if I say it was easy to set up (it was) - you may or may not find that it's easy for you. But I suspect it will be easy for most people, as they've included a really nice, simple user interface which, unlike many routers, leads the user to set it up securely right from the get-go. I love that you can just plug it into any USB power source and you're off to the races! And it takes almost zero space in my computer bag. I want this thing!! If only it actually worked ...
I started to notice that in some hotels it frequently drops connections, sometimes so badly it's completely unusable. I also noticed that in larger hotels where there are many Wifi access points (so-called "mesh networks"), the same network name (SSID) appears many times when you scan for Internet connections.
I have a theory that it's trying to connect to the strongest access point with the name I selected, and if two or more are very similar in strength, it's constantly switching between them. In one hotel this was no big deal; it settled on one connection after a short time, then worked perfectly for days. In another hotel it was mostly OK, but it dropped the connection every hour or so (similar to another reviewer who said it reset every 30 minutes). Now I'm in a hotel where it doesn't work at all! And I notice there are many duplicate names on the list, all with about the same signal strength.
Sorry I can't keep it; a "maybe" network wasn't what I had in mind.
Dear gl.inet: if you fix this (a firmware change is probably all it needs), please let me know. I'd buy it in a heartbeat if this was fixed, but for now it's a going back to Amazon!
Note: I've tried other little travel routers with captive portals and they have not worked (TP-Link TL-WR702N & ZyXEK MWR102 -- admittedly long ago).
You can use plug in to a power bank or use your notebook USB for power.
Don't know how to setup VPN yet. Will find out how...plug in usb power, and it run 24 hours and 7days without problem. Pass my test.
Wonderful! Love it.. Love the software.. I will test it for few days and see whether It will last long time.
after I change a new WiFi router, I have problem using this travel router. Contact support. And find out that my new WiFi create a conflict IP address with Travel router. Change travel router IP and it works again. Support was very helpful. I appreciate that.
I took the travel router with me to travel for 3 weeks. It works very well. Only when I came home and change my home wifi that I start to having problem. All fixed. Thanks.
Plug it into a power bank - just works
Plug it into a PC running Windows, it shows up as an ethernet interface, same with Mac and Linux.
Does pay to read the documentation included - and GL-iNet updates docs on their website as well
Under the hood - it's openwrt - and this is a good thing for those who would like to extend functionality.
As with all GL-iNet products - the management team and developers are active on their support forums, and they release updates on a regular basis.
