How hot does a HotSnapZ heat pack get?
The chemistry inside HotSnapZ is a safe and self-regulating reaction. The maximum internal temperature reaches 128-130F and typically 115-120F at the surface during normal use. The temperatures that HotSnapZ operate at are considered to be non-burning when used as directed.
What is inside a HotSnapZ pack and how does it work?
HotSnapZ reusable hand warmers and instant hot packs contain water, a small metal disc and sodium acetate, a safe food grade salt ingredient.
The clicking of a disk within the pad triggers the precipitation of the sodium acetate crystals. When the crystals precipitate, it releases the energy that was required to initially dissolve it and stored in the pouch.
The release of energy raises the temperature to a maximum temperature of 130F (54C). The process is theoretically repeatable indefinitely. HotSnapZ are a sodium acetate hand warmer.
Are the contents of HotSnapZ safe?
Yes. The contents of each HotSnapZ are Safe, Non-Toxic and Non-Hazardous. (Water and Sodium Acetate)

Tip for carry-on baggage in airline/plane travel: I made sure the green big ones were solid when traveling with it and put it in the tray outside my bag otherwise they'll check the entire bag (removing clothes and all) which is too much of a hassle. The TSA officers are often confused as to what the item is, so make sure to put it on a tray so that they can separately and quickly examine it. I put the liquid orange ones in the 3-1-1 bag of liquids because individually it looks smaller than 3oz or 100ml.
The only thing I wasn't quite ready for was the size. The photos don't show them relative to anything else, so it's hard determine. The red ones are about the size of a hamburger patty (before cooking). The green ones are about the size of a large tamale (or a very small burrito). That's fine for holding in your hands or putting into pockets, but not for putting them into gloves (thus the Hothands).
I definitely recommend these, but wanted to give a bit of data to judge against in terms of size. And now I'm going to go have a snack...
My key drawback (and worth -1 star) is that they are frustratingly sensitive; they just go off at the slightest jostle. One need not 'click' the clicker, mine frequently go off just by rubbing my finger over the disk. Doesn't seem to matter if it's in a spare pocket or a backpack or a purse, I cannot find a place to store these while moving. This is probably a good thing if you're arthritic and need it to be easy, but it eliminates a huge amount of the functionality for me.
Is the drawback a deal-breaker? Not really. They're still good for getting my hands warm. Just wish they didn't go off every time I looked at them funny.
