This book was not at all what I expected- from the description I was expecting instructions on how to create the patterns. Instead, the loose sheets at the back have all the construction lines done for you and you use them to trace the pattern lines and colour in the designs. There are no instructions whatsoever on how to create the grids yourself. There is, within the book, one set of instructions on creating a 10-point star but the first step is "start with a circle divided into 10 parts," but it doesn't tell you how to do this.
It would make an interesting colouring book and you can play with the designs and experiment with different patterns that can be made from the same construction grid; if that's what you're after it's a nicely put together book. But if you're after instructions on how to create compass and ruler constructions, this is not the right book.
My (new) copy also arrived extremely grubby so I am returning and am going to try "Islamic Geometric Patterns" by the same author instead.

Islamic Design Workbook Paperback – 13 October 2016

Enhance your purchase
In this inventive interpretation of the popular colouring book concept, Islamic design expert Eric Broug helps readers to create their own patterns, based on compositions from across the Islamic world. The book opens up the world of intricate Islamic patterns, allowing artists, designers and doodlers alike to learn about these works of art as they produce their own. With 48 Islamic geometric compositions from around the world to choose from, artists at all skill levels will relish the myriad opportunities to replicate these intricate patterns or create their own. The workbook’s clever design invites the pattern-maker to consider a composition in the book, take a corresponding loose leaf from the back of the book and figure out which sections of lines to trace to make the composition. Readers will have the unique satisfaction of making patterns appear where previously none were visible. Compositions – including a mix of more familiar geometric compositions and those that have scarcely been documented – are categorized by region and have various levels of complexity, making it possible for beginners to get started and artists or designers to develop their skills.

Most amazing book and presentation.
I am delighted with work/presentation of the writer-artist.
It is clearly visible how you may take whole of the design concept further when you have great person behind it all.
Great research and most fantastic presentation.
I could not wish for more.
The best buy for 2020 for myself.
I highly recommend it, and it would make great present to anyone interested in geometric design.
Thank you and thank you

The book is divided into three parts. An introduction of Islamic geometric patterns, the foundation and a step by step contruction of pattern designs. The second part to the book are 48 geometric designs with an historical summary categorised into three regions. The third part of the book houses the 48 activity sheets to work through the designs. I will be photocopying these sheets to experiment further with the designs. A great book to practice with. For a more detailed historical backdrop check out Broug's 'Islamic Geometric Design'.
