Balance First, the Rest Comes Easy
Why Forgetting the Training Wheels Is the Best Way to Learn
It’s time for your child to learn to ride a bike. Now you just need the equipment. Modern parents are leaving the training wheels out of the equation and opting for balance bikes. Why?
A bike without pedals allows your child to focus on learning one task at a time: balancing. By isolating and allowing them to master this one thing they gain confidence. Your job? Praise, praise, praise them.
Training wheels prolong the pain. What? Yes, this is true. It takes kids longer to learn to balance correctly on a bike with training wheels. When kids turn on a bike with training wheels, they lean into the training wheel instead of actually learning to balance. This leads to dependence on the training wheels. That’s why, when the trainers come off, kids usually fall and cry and don’t want to get on the bike again. This equals negative experience.
Very young children can straddle the balance bike and walk. The sooner, the better rule applies here. Most balance bikes are age graded for 18 months and up.
Independence. Yes, your toddler can get a big taste of independence learning to ride a balance bike. They will show you how it’s done mom and dad.
Training wheels look old fashioned. Yep, this is true and balance bikes have a coolness factor that says you’re an in-the-know parent.
Why Balance Bikes Are Better Than Training Wheels
- Allows child to concentrate on learning to balance first
- Builds confidence as they master small steps
- Your child learns faster
- Training wheels create a dependency that is not introduced with balance bikes
- Balance can be taught at very young age
Why Choose the Joovy Bicycoo?
The Joovy Bicycoo is a durable, well-designed balance bike for kids 18 months and above. The frame is made of aluminum so it is strong and lightweight just like high-end bikes. The lightweight frame makes controlling the bike much easier for kids, unlike the heavy wooden and steel versions. The pneumatic (air-filled) tires are wider than most, giving your child a solid foundation from which to start out. Many balance bikes on the market use EVA plastic tires which are cheaper and wear out much quicker than these rubber tires used on the Joovy Bicycoo. The suspension qualities of pneumatic tires give kids a much smoother ride.
We've incorporated a real, working hand brake for the rear tire because we believe kids should learn from the start how real gear works. This also helps save wearing out too many pairs of shoes as brakes.
The cushioned seat is adjustable for a perfect fit for your child. The bike has 12 inch tires and the overall dimensions are 21.5 H x 16.25 W x 33.5 D inches. The weight is 8.75 pounds. The Bicycoo is good until your child reaches 55 pounds.
Consider a Joovy Bicycoo if You:
- Want the best looking, most realistic bike on the market
- Want to teach your child from the beginning how real gear works
- Want an adjustable seat
- Are looking for a smooth and comfortable ride
What a Looker
Compared to the other balance bikes, the Bicycoo actually has a sense of design.
Comfort and Style
Cushioned adjustable seat is comfortable and provides a great perch while learning to balance.
Works just like a real bike and controls the rear tire.
Pneumatic tires give this balance bike a smooth, comfortable ride.

BUT... it was too tall for our 18mo to reach the ground while in the seat. I noticed a couple ways in which this situation could be improved:
1. Flip the frame over. The frame is a very simple/elegant design with a single arched tube. By removing (or not installing as directed in the first place) the front fork and handlebar you can install them with the frame flipped upside down.
2. In order to lower the seat as far as possible with the frame flipped I cut and renotched the tube which accepts the seat post.
Together these changes must have lowered the seat around 3-4” which was exactly what was needed!
