This book comprehensively covers all of Japan. It's crammed with interesting places to see, historical facts and insider tips. In addition to the100 towns, the book recommends side-trips and other notable locations. It has small maps that help readers quickly locate where things are.
I used this book to plan our two-week road trip through Tohoku. I found that the main travel books (Lonely Planet etc.) are too focused on the main tourist areas, whereas this book opens up the rest of Japan's. As far as I know, it's the only English-language book like it.
My only criticism is that a larger format book with more accommodation recommendations would make it much better.
My wife and I will be visiting Japan this October for England. This book will definitely be coming with us!

Ideal travel guidebook for returning visitors to Japan searching for a deeper cultural experience.
Away from the bustling cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, there is a hidden Japan--where quiet, bucolic ways of life, and proudly maintained local history and traditions can be found. Japan--100 Hidden Towns is a guide to this other, off-the-beaten-track, Japan. 100 towns from all of the country's 47 prefectures--including some places which may be unfamiliar even to natives of Japan--were carefully selected and reviewed by researchers from over 150 candidate areas, with a focus on nature, culture, food, access, and key dates to visit. Interesting tidbits of local history are also included in each review's "Did you know?" section, while a taste of subjectivity and a few anecdotes are provided in the "We say" segments. This book is supported by a website (www.100hiddentowns.jp) that includes detailed maps to the attractions, and updates to help readers while on their travels. As well as providing a wealth of travel information in one attractive, easily navigable volume, the book is ideal for casual reading--deepening your understanding of Japan as you pour over the pages.

Product description
Review
It's rare to find a travel guidebook where "deep" and "characterful" are descriptors that come to mind but Japan - 100 Hidden Towns is just that: not only 400 pages of useful travel information but a book you can peruse on an idle afternoon, deepening your understanding of Japan as you go.
The book is well organized and pleasantly laid out with a color coordination system and symbols that are both aesthetically sharp and help you find what you need.
100 Hidden Towns has the feel of a knowledgeable local telling you about the places no one else goes, which, in a way, is exactly what the book is.
(It) is well thought out and accessible enough to appeal to both Japan buffs and keen first-time visitors.
--METROPOLIS
The book is a treasure trove of information for travelers looking to explore Japan's rural side, and covers every part of the country, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. For each town, the book presents must see spots, places of natural beauty, tips on accommodations and how to get around, cultural attractions, food and drink recommendations, and the best times to visit the town - often when flowers or trees are in bloom, or when cultural celebrations are held. The book also recommends destinations for people with special interests, from history buffs and foodies to nature lovers and traditional craft aficionados. It's well researched and thorough.

娘が留学予定で購入。地元の街が載っていたことも購入のもう一つの理由です。よくあるガイドブックとも違う内容で気に入りました。
