I have purchased several books on Japanese Gardening. I am not interested in the gardening style itself. However, I am researching the uses of mosses and lichens in the yard. This book has become my all time favorite gardening book. I learned about the history of a nation, it's people and it's gardens, and how they all intertwine to make the garden what it is today.
The drawings are fascinating, and the photographs are beautiful while being perfectly in line with the text. The use of plants, stones and rocks, sand and water within the confining borders of a property are all completely covered in a logical, thoroughly interesting format.
For me, the combination of diagrams, photographs and intelligent historical documentation made this book perfect. The discussions of planting materials and arrangements were clear and concise. Although I don't plan on creating a Japanese Garden I understand how it was done in ancient times and how it is done today. I will reread this book many, many times.
