Pros: great video/picture quality; great audio pick-up; easy to setup; good value
Cons: n/a so far
Recommended Use: best for video calls; fairly good for other generic recording uses
Setup: Setup was extremely simple. Win7 recognized it immediately upon plugging in and installed the relevant drivers. I didn't have any webcam software installed at first, so I searched for an online webcam test, of which there are plenty. The video worked through this test, but the audio did not for some unknown reason. I later realized I should have read the user guide first, because I found that Jellycomb offers a webcam software which contains lots of manual control options. Once I installed this software from their website, the audio worked well. (See below for details and find the software on the Jellycomb site under "Support > Drivers.") The instructions in the user guide are clear and thorough, though I did notice a couple of minor typos.
Build quality: This webcam feels sturdy despite being mostly plastic. The mounting clip moves fluidly and stays where you adjust it. Same for the adjustable ball head. I haven't measured the length of the USB cable (which is integrated into the back of the unit), but it seems plenty long enough (probably around 6 feet or so) for most applications; I actually kept most of it wrapped up in the twisty tie for tidiness. The manual focus ring is smooth, too.
Video options and quality: The video quality is great for a webcam. On fully automatic settings at 1920x1080, it produces a bright, clear image - even with some backlighting from the windows. Putting the webcam on fullscreen, the image remains clear and crisp. There is a very small amount of ISO noise, but that's on par with any modern flagship smartphone, and in my opinion, quite acceptable for a camera sensor this small. I especially like the significant flexibility in this little camera's manual settings. I can control focus manually using the little focus ring around the lens, and I can control exposure, brightness, contrast, white balance, hue and more through the included software. I noticed no stuttering or lag in the image, even at full resolution. (For reference, I'm running Win7 on a 5th-gen i7 with 16gb RAM and a solid state drive.) The frame rate stayed pretty consistently in the 23-26 fps range. (The max frame rate is supposed to be 25 fps at 1920x1090.) I did notice that the captured video files have a bit more yellow to them than the streaming video image, even after adjusting the white balance. That's probably due to the renderer used in the included software, so your results may be different. The captured files save in Microsoft AVI format, but again, a different software will probably offer different options. This likely won't matter at all to you if you're only using a webcam for streaming and don't need to save any footage.
Audio options and quality: The audio didn't work initially in the web-based test I tried, but after downloading the webcam software Jellycomb offers in the user guide, I was able to get the audio working. (For anyone else with this issue, open the software, go to "Options > Audio Capture Filter... > Pin Line Input Mix" and click the "Enable" box. After doing that, my audio worked fine in the web-based test. I wouldn't be surprised if the earlier audio issue was simply because I hadn't restarted my computer after installation. Being a bit of an audio nerd, I was pleasantly surprised at how clear and true-to-life the mic sounds on this. It seems to have excellent dynamic range, performing well in the whisper test with a fan running in the background AND the loud clap test with no clipping.
Photo snapshot: I'm pleased with the quality of the snapshots this camera produces, though I did notice a couple of small quirks. (I'm a professional photographer by trade, so I'm probably more picky than most people about this.) When using the snapshot feature built into Jellycomb's software, there was a small amount of green tint to the resulting image in comparison to the video stream, and the max resolution I could produce was 1280x720, despite the option of a 1920x1080 snap. However, when I used the "preview" feature for the video image, I got a full-res image with no tint. I like that it allows the user to specify which file format to save in.
Overall impressions: This webcam is definitely a win. The video and audio are more than adequate for most use cases. I really like the manual focus ring around the lens (great for preventing auto-focus mistakes in a cluttered frame), the clever clip for mounting on a monitor or setting on a table, the integrated screw mount on the bottom of the clip for a tripod, and the ball head that allows for easy, stable framing. It definitely seems like a lot of thought went into making this webcam intuitive and feature-rich. The accompanying software does have some minor quirks, but the average basic user probably won't even notice them and will probably be using different software anyway. All in all, I would certainly recommend this cam.
The picture quality is very good, and the frame rate is good. I use this camera for webcam meetings as well as for recording business related demonstrations. I put together proposals and using my screen and the camera can send a proposal with explanations to my clients. The sound quality of the recording is superb.
Installation was a snap. It also works well with Skype.
I 100% without reservations recommend this webcam. It's much better than the price might suggest.
