I remember adoring this book when I was a child, there was always a waiting list for it at our school library and having letters to open inside it was just so thrilling. Fast forward more than twenty years and I bought it for my 3 year old as a nostalgic treat. I thought she would be a little young for it but it seems that the thrill of being able to open and read the letters is universal to all ages.
The story follows the tale of a postman who delivers letters to recognisable and popular characters from fairyland such as Cinderella , the 3 bears, the wolf that ate little red riding hoods granny, goldilocks and the wicked witch. Each is really witty and engaging (my daughter is much too young to appreciate the humour but it plays on the classic fairytales) and are bright and colourful, taking the form of a postcard, birthday card, magazine and little illustrated storybook.
The tale of the postmans journey is written in rhyme throughout, and is a little clunky in places, not as naturally free flowing as other rhyming books, and the language is a little old fashioned, so for both those reasons I have to take a star off as I'm not sure it really hits the same mark with audiences that it did all those years ago. It's still a gorgeous book though, and I would definitely recommend it for your childs collection, probably best suited for 4-7 year olds.

Charming interactive book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 November 2020Verified Purchase
Lovely follow on from Each Peach Pear Plum yet completely stand alone too. Such a fun interactive story following the post mans day, delivering post to well-known fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters, giving us a glimpse into their lives and follow-on stories. (Three Bears, the Wicked Witch, Jack and the Giant, Cinderella, the Wolf from Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Pigs, and Goldilocks.)
Love how the story does full circle.
Same art work as Each Peach Pear Plum with beautiful illustrations, though the rhyming isn't as stong and a bit clunky in places.
There are six envelopes in total, each with a different surprise piece of post inserted written on different materials. The 'envelope' is open on the top with a large insert the width and length of the actual page. Big enough for little hands to retrieve the post over and over limiting damage. The post inserts are made of dense paper or card so shouldn't rip too easily.
Book measures 20.5x26.5cm (HxW) with a hard back cover. The book came wrapped in cellophane. Bought for 2.5 year old though this would be a fun book for an older child learning to read.

Brilliant book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 December 2021Verified Purchase
My son and daughters have all loved this brilliant book. Features references to many nursery rhymes and fairy tales so worth reading the following stories before reading this book: Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Hansel and Gretal, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs.
Also makes references to The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, Hey Diddle Diddle, Simple Simon Met a Pieman, Three Blind Mice, Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers, Jack and Jill, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Mother Goose, Humpty Dumpty, Little Miss Muffet, Old King Cole and Hickory Dickory Dock, Little Jack Horner and Sing a Song of Sixpence.
A great rhyming story featuring fun envelopes containing letters, postcards and catalogues, etc - my youngest son and daughter were especially excited about the £1 note in the birthday card, though were disappointed to find out it wasn't real.

Great book, mediocre publisher.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 January 2015Verified Purchase
The Ahlberg books are fantastic and I only give this three stars instead of five because the publisher needs to quality control. The printer they are using is mediocre. I have had three books now from the Ahlberg's with problems- a squashed cover that was glued on improperly, a misprinted page, horrible smelling inks- which is a real shame because their books are so fantastic. If it had just been one book I would have not noticed but three... I would easily pay more money to have a good quality print with good inks and papers. These books are classics! I wish the publisher would also treat them as such.

Great follow on from 'lift the flap' books
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 December 2018Verified Purchase
This was one of my favourite library books as a child. I've just bought it for my 3.5year old nephew. It's a great 'next step' from lift the flap books. It has little letters in envelopes on every other page which are part of the story. Perfect for maintaining interest
