This attractive book features six heroes featuring six legendary “superheroes” from ancient tales. There’s not much else to link them beyond that very broad definition, as they come from all corners of the Earth, from varying cultures and histories; three men and three women.
They are in order: Hua Mulan (from the Chinese ballad), Hanuman (the Indian monkey-god from The Ramayana), Inanna (Sumerian goddess), Shahrazad (the Middle-Eastern Queen from a Thousand and One Nights), Loki (everyone’s favourite Norse god) and Anansi (the African spider trickster-god of Ghana).
Each story is told by a different author and illustrated by a different artist, who (judging from their names) has a connection to each culture from which the stories derive. Along with some of the familiar names and stories – you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t know who Loki or Mulan are these days – are gods and heroes that don’t often get the limelight.
It’s an attractive looking book that extols a number of virtues: not just battle prowess, but also kindness, cunning and loyalty, and so would make a great present for young readers.
