We casually/accidentally added in an important and fun step. After each word was slapped, we came up with silly sentences involving it. For example, when one got the fly with the word "big," we said things like, "Wow, that's a BIG fly!"
I actually tried to make sure each word was repeated a few times instead of just slapping it and moving on.
As they get faster we might not repeat the words so much, though.
It's important to keep it FUN and POSITIVE.
