As someone who buy my daughter many different kinds of books, small, big, long, short, this was a huge disappointment. I thought it would be cute but honestly if is just not good. I guess kids might like it because I find the owl cute but the story has absolutely no flow, no rhyming, just nothing going for it. It does puzzle me how there is high reviews for this book which is why I bought it.
But again, as someone who tries out many different books and dreads every day to my daughter, I have given this book multiple times and it’s literally my least favorite out of her whole shelf of books.

Review
Praise for LITTLE OWL'S NIGHT by Divya Srinivasan: This debut picture book gets it all just right. The story, while familiar, is executed deftly and with heart, and the crisp graphic elements of the artwork juxtapose well against the pretty prose. --Booklist, starred review The story's chief virtue is its graceful, balletic prose... It's a provocative inversion of the classic bedtime story, and a solid first outing. Srinivasan's message is that night is a delightful place, and that's useful knowledge for small children. --Publisher's Weekly A graceful bedtime story celebrates the beauty found in night... Hold on to Little Owl's tail feathers and soar. --Kirkus ReviewsThis exceptional first book by Srinivasan, a talented illustrator... follows Little Owl during his nighttime explorations... this bedtime tale may even convert children who are afraid of the dark into adventuresome night owls -New York Times Book ReviewThis is the most visually and verbally gorgeous picture book of the year... Simple, dazzling - and simply dazzling. --The Boston Globe

Our go to book for baby showers

My son adored this book so much that we still have his original board book and he is almost 10. We give it to every new little person that is on the way into this world - in fact, I popped on here to grab it for a teacher about to head out to have her baby. I was extremely surprised to see ONE STAR reviews for this book which is why I am leaving my own FIVE STAR review. I wish I could respond to other reviewers directly, but there are a few that I will address here.
One person claims that there are errant quotation marks, but in fact there are not. The sentence I'm assuming is the one in question is simple split up on the page so as not to interrupt the picture.
Another states that Little Owl SCREAMS mommy and this has caused her child to do the same. Um. Okay. Little Owl never screams anything. There is no screaming in this book. It is a peaceful and calm little story. The only thing I can find is: "Mama," Little Owl whispered, "tell me again how the night ends." I'm glad folks are reading to their children, as this gives all an opportunity to work on reading comprehension.
Someone else states that there is no flow and there is no point to the story. What a shame you missed it. I guess books that don't rhyme don't work for you? Not sure what the problem is.
Sorry. I'm done being terse. This book is sweet. My son and I enjoyed having a little book that mentions animals and their activities that are slightly out of the ordinary for standard kids books. Sure my kid loves kitties and puppies and lions and tigers, but this book mentions bats and opossums, hedgehogs and skunks. There is a neat little snail and pretty moths. It's about nighttime creature activities that little kids don't see. It's cute and the pictures are clear and bold. I've probably bought this book five times at this point.

Truly awesome book for role play

Truly awesome book for role play.
I’ve created my 3 and 2 year old daughters a classroom at our house. We’re currently doing a Blossom&Root Early Learning Vol.1. Each week, we have a book set out on top of our Montessori shelves. For this week, this book is the book of the week. I have dressed up both my daughter in an explorer outfit with accessories for an animal hunt; binocular, compass, etc as seen on the top portion of the shelves. Within the book, it mentions possums, hedgehogs, ants, raccoons, beavers, moths, bear, fox, frog, bats, and a few more. It also mentions different sounds. This is cool because the kids’ imagination to do a role play in relation to this book has no limit as the content is very much open ended for little thinkers. My daughters enjoyed this book very very much. Certainly a must buy!

Pictures are good for learning animal names, but there's a typo!

So, the color scheme and pictures are nice. My twins generally would sit through this whole book from about 4 months onward. However, as a teacher, I'm bothered by one of the sentences in the book. I've diagrammed it and everything, and I really think it is an error. It does not make sense to me in terms of syntax.
"Dewdrops sparkle on leaves and grass like tiny stars come down."
That just isn't correct. I hate reading it out loud to my kids.
Did not buy the sequels, and won't recommend it to others because of that error.

Favorite 2 year old book that mom also loves reading. Good baby gift

My 2.5 year olds favorite book. Can’t sleep without reading this one book.
Best part is mom and dad both really love it as opposed to getting sick of it. It’s a rather dark book as it all takes place at night.
There are lots of adorable woodland creatures the owl meets at night.
The wording is very poetic, particularly at the end when his mama tells him how the night ends.
We love it so much I just started to buy more of the little owl books too. Excited to buy more from this author.
Also just bought for two different moms having babies. A great small gift for a coworker or great add on for a basket of baby items for a baby shower. Would make a great registry add on.
Overall I’d highly recommend it.
