I bought these a couple of years ago and used a couple of times but it seemed like a little hard work. My reasoning is that food stuck quite easily even though I followed the seasoning instructions from the Lodge web site, but on the skillet, things stuck very easily and on the large pot, it seemed to rust a bit through the black seasoning and things stick easily. So they were put away in the cupboard.
Since that time I have been to shops and noticed that the more expensive brands like Staub and Le Crueset, have a lot smoother surface to begin with. (Some people would argue this isn't the issue and that a rough surface can also be non stick, probably true, but I want a good useable pan, without rust). So I am willing to try again rather than just take up cupboard space and I am currently following some Youtube videos to refinish the surface properly and start from scratch. (Apparently its mentioned in the video that Lodge is poorly finished, probably as a result of cutting costs over the last few years). I am in the middle of the process and I have to say it is fairly hard work and really the pans should have been better made in the first place. I will do that then reseason a few times then see if that improves the pans.
If the pans dont improve after the resurface and reseason than I will give them to charity for someone else to play with and do what I should have done in the first place and buy a quality European pan and put it down to experience. Will update soon, hopefully with some good news.
I got this for my mom. The deeper pan came with a chip in the seasoning. However the shallower pan (the lid) came with a lot of chips. I initially thought they were just water spots but when we first used it it became clear that the seasoning was defective. I was gonna return but i searched google and found thats it’s fixable. My mom didnt seem too bothered by it but it wouldve been nice to get a good set you didnt have to fix. That aside, the pans are sturdy and cook well and for $80 you get 2 pans.
I purchased this set for baking sour dough bread. Having used a Dutch oven for years, I read reviews for this item that suggested it would be easier to score bread turned out onto the flat surface and that it could be turned out more gently than being dropped into a deep kettle. While it is easier to score this way, I find the seal isn't as tight on this unit as my Dutch oven, and thus steam escapes and I don't get as much oven spring from my loaves - resulting in a flatter bread. If I didn't already have a Dutch oven, I'm sure this would be fine. However, for me this an unnecessarily specialized piece of bulky, heavy kitchen equipment.
You're entering a lottery if you buy this product. Many people received defective products that looks like rust spots or scratches. Lodge literally shoves a 20lbs cast iron pan into a cardboard box with a piece of paper separating the lid and pot. The only protection between getting thrown to the ground while shipping and the cast iron is a thin piece of cardboard. Good luck with all the scuffed units being returned, Lodge.
I received it with rust on the handle. There was also little bumps in the coating that will probably chip after the first wash. Furthermore, there are scratches on the outline, but not everywhere so it’a definitely not part of the design. Very cheap. I am disappointed.
Material is solid. Nonetheless, there is 1-2 rust points on handle, one chip, a couple of visible dents. Price is pretty ok. I can live with those defects. Still I had expected Lodge has a higher QA/QC system in place.
