Having seen the movie, I thought I get the book for a more accurate version of the story. Hollywood being hollywood will always exaggerate just to draw in the crowd. Marcus in the opening chapter brags about American forces being a supreme millitary power that no one dare mess with. He tends to forget history and especially Vietnam that no matter who or what the enemy, sheer brutal or force is no guaranteed win.
He continues to brag about the SEALS being the monster force that no enemy dare face it and that it being the very best force in existence.
It's all very well bragging in a book but the reality is different when faced with a determined enemy as he did in Afghanistan. His so called the very best force is annihilated and he only survived because of the kindness of some villagers otherwise he too would have died. Probably best if it was written in a neutral point of view rather than bragging of the SEALS being the very best when its proven in Afghanistan it was clearly not

Double edged swordReviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 January 2019
In a way unputdownable, especially during the battles descriptions and the arduous Seal training pages. But over the top chest beating about the US of A and how great the Seals are. No mention of other nations fighting forces who have sacrificed their soldiers for the same cause. Quite shocking also to dismiss the atrocities of Abu Graib as justifiable ill treatment of a 'bunch of guys', which I found quite disgusting regardless of what he went went through. It also has a whiff of Bravo 2 Zero about it, and I do wonder if there is aspects of it being made up or exaggerated, just saying. You get the sense also that he is carrying a massive mount of guilt with surviving and having lost so many comrades in the battles and the abortive rescue mission, hence the sense of over the top justification of some very right wing views.

The Story You Won't Want To Believe...Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 December 2014
Even if you've never read anything about Special Forces missions you HAVE to read this! Although I have an absolute fascination with the experiences of these awe inspiring military personnel and read everything I can find, this is the one that's simply mindblowing. It gives an amazing insight into the SEALs training then, once the report of Operation Redwing starts Marcus immediately draws you in. You will hold your breath as the tension builds and the almost incomprehensible valour and determination of these men will reduce you to tears of admiration. It's the story you'll wish was fiction rather than the factual account it actually is.

Must read. Incredible. Male/female readers alike.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 March 2016
Unputdownable exciting, shocking, detailed, well written and described true account. The detail of SEAL training beforehand explains how Marcus survives as a true battle trained warrior. Thank goodness for heroes like SEALS and SAS, SBS and all armed forces. I bought the book after watching the film , unusual for me but so worth it. I'm female, mum and fifty and I couldn't put this down. Thank you Marcus for sharing and RIP to your heroic warrior buddies. Condolences and best wishes to their families .

You get a real feeling for the SEAL training and what these men go through to earn their trident. The story of the actual incident which lead to the film Lone Survivor is incredible. The determination of Marcus Luttrell is just hard to comprehend.A terrific read.
