Patchwork is a form of needlework that involves sewing together pieces of fabric into a larger design. In the past, it was a way to make use of leftover pieces of cloth to create clothing and quilts. Today, patchwork is a form of art, in which the designers use precious fabrics to create beautiful textiles. The use of uneven pieces of fabric in particular can result in real masterpieces and is therefore being practiced by a large number of textile artists. To create a beautiful quilt, however, requires effort and time, but the available patches just do not want to fit together. So choose your patches carefully and keep a healthy supply of buttons to not only finish your quilt, but to make it better and more beautiful than your opponent‘s.

This game is in it's own league! At least I don't know other games that are quite like this one.

Setup is quick, so is putting everything back in the box. A game takes about 20 minutes. Everything about the rules is simple so you can learn to play while watching someone else play, or just by reading the rules I guess (we didn't).

There are 4 "zones":
- Yours
- Your opponent's
- A shared one which defines who's turn it is and when the game ends (Also contains a few "free" patches)
- The surface you're playing on (a table?)

Setup:
- Each player picks a board (green or yellow). Your board is associated to a pawn of the same color.
- Each player gets 5 buttons
- Place both pawns on the first space of the board (long green space on one of the edges)
- Decide who'll start (rock paper scisors)
- Make a circle around the shared board using all the patches.
- Place the neutral pawn (white/wood) right after the smallest patch (2 spaces)
- That's it.

Turns:
- It's your turn to play when you land behind or on top of your opponent, which means you can play more than once in a row.
- When it's your turn, you can pick any of the 3 patches following the white/wooden pawn, givent that you have enough "money" (buttons).
- The price of the patch, how many spaces you have to moove to pick it up, it's yeld, it's size, it's shape and what your board can accomodate should influence your choice. Don't fret, you'll understand after a few mistakes.
- Once you pick a patch, you pay it's price, you move your colored pawn the amount of spaces the patch dictates and you place the patch on your board. If you can't, you discard it.
- Repeat!

Your goal is to fill your board as much as possible before landing on the last space on the shared board. That's an awful lot of text for how easy this game is to pick up. It's a bit harder to master though!

If no one can show you, I'd suggest watching a youtube video. It is dead simple.

Figured I'd add my two cents to the well deserved 5-star ranks!

INTRO: Patchwork is a light-medium, 2-player abstract resource management game, quite unlike any other I've ever played. When I first saw this displaying on people's wishlists on BGG last year, I kept wondering, "what are people thinking? this looks so incredibly boring." And at first, honestly, it does! BUT, it is really so much more than just a quilt making game. Uwe Rosenberg has a gem on his hands here that I"m sure will only gain in popularity with time, and that people will definitely still be playing in 10 years - it's that good.

SETUP: Pretty simple setup, easily under 3 minutes. To start, give each player a quilt board (9x9 grid). Put out the timer track in between boards, and place both player markers at the beginning of the track. Fill the single square tile spaces on the timer track with the single tile squares. Then set up ALL the 'quilt pieces' in a large circle/oval surrounding the timer track, in between the player boards. Find the starting 1x2 piece and place the Start token next to it. Finally, give each player 5 'buttons' (your currency) and place the rest in a pile off to the side. Place the special 7x7 tile next to these. Good to go.

GAMEPLAY: The beauty of the game is magnified by its simplicity here. On your turn, you really only have two options: either 1) move your player marker one timer space beyond your opponent, and collect buttons = number of spaces traveled, or 2) purchase a piece of 'cloth,' paying the appropriate number of buttons indicated, and then also moving your player marker the indicated number of timer spaces. (For example, one of the many Tetris-y style pieces might have written on it 3B, where B is actually a picture of a button, followed by 2T where T is actually a picture of an hourglass). And seriously, that's it. The depth and strategy come in deciding when and what to buy, and maximizing your button potential for purchases, as well as endgame scoring.

There are a few other idiosyncracies that come along as well. The pieces you can buy are limited to the 3 clockwise from the Starting token position, which continually moves around the board after a purchase. So the pieces available for purchase continue to change on any turn after one in which a piece was bought (remember, you can choose option 1 above and not buy anything to gain more buttons; in fact, sometime you have to do this, not being able to afford any of the 3 pieces available). Recognizing what you need to fill in on your board vs. what you think your opponent is looking for is key.

Also of note is when you are the first to pass a single tile piece on the timer track, you get to take that piece and place it on your 'quilt,' which is helpful when you need to fill in the small gaps. Likewise, when you pass the button symbol on the timer track, you then count up all your buttons shown on your previously purchased quilt pieces, and acquire that many from the 'bank.'

Lastly, there is a special 7x7 piece that the first person to form a completed 7x7 quilt on their board acquires. At the end of the game, this piece, not surprisingly, is worth 7 points :) All buttons you have at the end of the game are added up, 1 point per button, minus 2 points per any open square still left on your player board ('quilt'). Whoever has the higher score wins. In case of a tie, whoever reached the end of the timer track first wins.

ART & COMPONENT QUALITY: For what it is, the artwork is nice and works for this game. Each piece kinda has a slightly used look on it, as you are supposed to be sewing pieces of cloth together, making a Patchwork (hence the name). But the component quality - YES! So good; they nailed it. Nice punchboard thickness to it, feels great in your hands. The box is perfectly sized for the components, too. No extra room not needed. Relatively small; not a lot of shelf space. Box art is better in person, too, than the picture here. Overall, absolutely wonderful. Should last for years and years.

CONCLUSION: I was stunned by how easily my wife and I picked this up and played right out of the box, and yet how much depth and replayability there is to the game. (Again, the rulebook couldn't have been simpler and easier to follow). The setup of the pieces will change every game, so no two games will be alike - or the odds I'm sure are ridiculously small, anyway!

Overall, I'm really glad I kept hearing and reading more about this game, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been put off initially by the theme. It's a great way to spend a half hour with a friend or loved one, and is easy enough to teach (the rulebook is PERFECT to understand and beautifully designed...way to go guys). Great for non/light gamers, and yet definitely enough strategy there for the more hardcore gamers. Which is perfect for my wife (non-gamer) and I (gamer).

One final thought: this game honestly will probably replace Lost Cities for us (one of the few games she'll actually play with me). If given the choice, I'm sure both of us would rather play this one.

I bought this for my 7-year-old daughter for Christmas but my wife and I have been playing it mainly at night. The rules are exceptionally simple but the game actually has a tremendous amount of strategy. My favourite two player game is currently Jaipur but Patchwork may very well dethrone it, it's that good.

Both players have their own gridded mat on which they need to construct a quilt. On a turn, the player may take any of the next three quilt patches from those encircling the board: there is a rather substantial wooden marker to mark the current point and it's moved to where the patch was removed from each time, thus your choice affects the patches available to your opponent.

Each patch is a shaped like a tetris piece (of three, four or five blocks) and so the first puzzle is fitting these onto your grid. Each piece has a cost (in buttons, the game's currency) and time printed on too. You see, to represent time, there is a third board with a track on which the players have a token: once a player reaches the centre they can make no further changes to their quilt. The game finishes when both are over the finishing line.

To buy a patch you have to both pay its cost in buttons and also move your piece around the timeline the number of spaces shown on that piece. The twist is that the person at the back continues to play until the other player is at the back, golf style. That way there is a strategic element of taking the pieces with the low time cost in order to get multiple sequential goes and, in doing so, access to the better patches. However, the more awkward shaped pieces tend to be cheaper so sometimes you have to pay high in order to get a piece that actually fits your quilt. In addition, many of the patches have one, two or three buttons icons on them: for these you get payouts whenever a button icon is crossed on the timeline (there are several of these) and it's important to get lots of buttons in the early game as otherwise you don't have enough cash to buy what you want later on. So there are many factors in play here: money, time and best fit.

If there's no quilt piece you want you can, instead, move in front of the other player on the timeline and gain one button for each square you moved, thus allowing you to cash time for money to get access to the more lucrative pieces. There are also five 1x1 patches on the timeline that are won by the first player to cross over them: extremely useful for filling those inevitable holes.

At the end of the game, each player loses two buttons for each empty square on their quilt board, so it pays to get as much covered as possible. Finally there's a 7 button bonus for the first player to complete a 7x7 square without gaps. The winner is simply the player with the most buttons at the end. We've had winning scores ranging from the negatives to 40, but we've also had some very close games too, with just a button or two between us.

All in all, Patchwork is a pure gold: it has simple and straightforward rules, it's quick and easy to play, tense in places and a lot of fun! It's also has surprisingly strategic depth: I especially like how you can really stick it to the other player, by making a snazzy chain of moves when they go too far ahead on the timeline. This is especially satisfying when you are running out of buttons but are then able to set up a chain of moves that pushes you over a button icon giving you a button haul you can then use for your second or third contiguous go.

This is the second Uwe Rosenburg game I've played: Bohnanza, too, is a fantastically original and fun game so I'm starting to think this guy is some kind of game designing genius: I'll definitely be checking out his other offerings (looking at your Caverna).
