It is captivating from the beginning and I couldn’t put it down. I finished reading the book in a day. Perhaps I am familiar with the settings, history and the events that happened, it’s so real. Details of the poverty, one child policy, young educated wanted to make their dreams come through, the evolution of the economy, the firewalls behind Facebook and other social network, etc are all so real. When I read the book, it was like someone is narrating their story to me, like watching a movie in front of me. The images were so vivid although they were mere words. But words that bring you into the characters’ inner thoughts, their struggles, their happiness, their hopes. For someone living in Singapore and have connections with China, this could be a story that my relatives, or friends in China may have experienced.
From the plot, I thought the ending could be a little darker than what it is. But hey, who would not want a happy ending in an already stressed and sad world.
