4.0 out of 5 stars List of Features. Pokemon Snap Reboot.
Reviewed in the United States on 30 April 2021
Basically Pokemon Snap with added features. I wouldn't say it's a sequel rather than a reboot

Still on-rails taking photos like you're on a safari, or casual Disney ride. Take pictures, and get score at the end.

Most of the value is based on replay value: getting the best shot, and showing off/sharing with friends.

I would say it's overpriced at launch at $60 if you're in it for just to play through all the core levels and story. Those that put in the time for to 100% their Photodex may get their money's worth.

Very fun game when caught in the moment of just taking pictures instead of learning how to progress/unlock stages (which i'll go into later)

--Now onto the list of features:

1. Choose a Character.

Instead of playing Todd Snap like in the original, you can choose your own character. It's not really extensive; just choose from preset of gender, skin and hair color (cannot select individually).

8 to choose from. Does not affect story.

Not able to customize another further like hair style or clothes

2. Presentation

Graphics are modernized for the Switch and look really good.

There are some frame-rate dips at times and have some odd textures when you zoom in with camera. I'd say, they could have waited for Switch Pro/2, or VR for a more enjoyable/graphic intensive experience.

There is voice acting in the game for cutscenes and some plot elements. There are some sections where characters just say one word or phrase and you have to read the rest

All pokemon behavior and scenarios are still scripted and not random

3. Story.

You're traveling around the Lental region to help with Professor Mirror research by investigating the Illumina phenomenon.

Story progression requires you to unlock certain routes in certain stages which is not always apparent. Unless you follow an online guide; it's trail-and-error, or you just get lucky

4. Day-and-night cycle

There are day and night sections for most courses. Different Pokemon comes out at night as opposed to day time and vice versa. Same pokemon will do different actions.

Night courses needs to be unlocked

5. Scoring system

Scale of one to four stars. Based on pokemon's behavior when taking the shot

To complete Photodex you need to take pictures of each pokemon, and each of their photo tiers (star rating)

There's also a numerical Expedition points.

As you take higher-quality photos, you earn Expedition Points that go toward improving the Research Level of each area opening up more levels to explore in that area

Instead of technique points (in original) it's split between 'Direction' and 'Placement' points

If other Pokemon are in the shot; you get more points. Think in the original you get more points for same Pokemon in photo.

The more points you earn, and more visits you make to a course make it level up; having Pokemon become more friendlier and are more poseable

6. Get Pokemon attention.

Similar to original, but may have different names

Fruit is called fluffruit

You play a melody, or music box to wake up pokemon or make them dance. Single press of a button don't have to pokefute type patterns

Illumina orb. Throw to make pokemon light up, preform different actions

Also able to dash (with upgrade) like in the original game

Pokemon can't evolve like original game which is disappointing. Don't expect a magikarp to turn into a gyarados by throwing something at it

7. Scanning feature

Able to use your camera to scan the area like a scouter in Dragon Ball

8. Re-Snap feature.

Photoshop and re-touch your photos by adding stickers or filters

When album is full able to expand data to save more photos

Able to share with friends on social media

Able to print out pictures with official printer accessory (Instax Mini Link Printer) where before you're only able to print out at Blockbuster kiosk

9. Requests

Basically side quests for taking photos of particular Pokemon in given area.

Requests are not retro-active. If you don't have a Pokemon photo tier/star unlocked have to choose between one of them to submit which can be frustrating at times, and feels like unnecessary padding

10. Motion Controls

In handheld mode about to use gyroscope to move Switch around and take pictures. Best when played on rotating office chair

5.0 out of 5 stars As a huge fan of the original, a childhood favorite...
Reviewed in the United States on 2 May 2021
This game is A MUST PLAY!! I''e already put six hours in and have mostly just been playing the first island over and over again because I'm having such a blast finding out all the special interactions.

It's like the original but HYPED UP! So many unique and charming interactions, the star system for classifying types of behaviours in the photos is genius. Seriously, if you liked the original, you will love this! If you've never played the original and you're not sure if you'll like this - if you're a fan of looking at creatures in their natural habitat or interacting in a natural way, you'll get something out of this game! I've laughed a few times too because some of the interactions I've seen so far are so silly and fun.

In my opinion, the incentives of discovering new secret interactions or new pathways to take will keep me coming back until I've sifted through every last bit of content this game has to offer!

It's gorgeous and a must have for any Pokemon fan who's been let down by Gamefreak's treatment of Pokemon as a franchise and was hungry for some more Pokemon-centric content with an emphasis on Pokemon behaviour and daily life. It's everything I ever wanted in a Snap sequel, a real dream come true!!
