NH-P1 header

The NH-P1 is Noctua’s first passive CPU cooler and has been custom-designed for fanless operation from the ground up: in enclosures with good natural convection, its six heatpipes and thick, widely spaced heatsink fins enable it to cool modern high-end CPUs with low to moderate heat dissipation completely passively (see setup guidelines and list of recommended cases). For further enhanced performance or semi-passive setups that only spin up their fans when necessary, the NH-P1 can be outfitted with a low-speed, ultra-quiet 120mm fan such as the NF-A12x25 LS-PWM. Using it on a ryzen 5600x in eco mode with no fans seems to top out at around 75C. When using the old silverstone he02 cooler with a slow case fan the temp would go up to 82C where it would apparently throttle. The install is a bit easier than the silverstone, and the torx screwdriver needed is even included. Idle is around 50C in a 25C ambient room.

Overall, you still need to use a low energy cpu with it (no more than 60tdp), but this is still one of the best passive coolers right now considering the discontinued cr-95 doesn't support am4 sockets. This cooler also does not block ram sockets depending on how you orient it, nor does it get close to or block the first pci-e or graphics card.

I've decided to upgrade my silent pc with AMD Ryzen 5 3400G rated at 65W TDP to AMD 5950X rated at 105W TDP. As you know, AMD 5950X has 16 cores and 32 threads, and it's rated pretty good. Previously, I was using Nofan CR-80EH as CPU cooler for AMD Ryzen 5 3400G, and it worked out pretty good.

Now that Noctua fan-less NH-P1 is out, I've decided to try it on AMD 5950X. Remember, Noctua does NOT recommend fan-less pairing of Noctua P1 and AMD 5950X, and Noctua recommends adding a fan with AMD 5950X. However, I've decided to pair Noctua P1 and AMD 5950X in a fan-less configuration since I don't play games on it and mainly use it for YouTube, movie playing, browsing, music listening.

Here is the trick I use to keep the CPU from heating up too much and under-throttling the CPU:
I set the maximal CPU Thermal Throttle Limit at the motherboard. Most recent X570 based motherboards will support this feature.

Here is how you do it in case of ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming 4:

I.e. Max temperature of AMD 5950X is 90°C.
This means, when CPU reaches temperature of 90°C,
it will automatically reduce CPU clock speed to cool down.
So I'm setting the maximal CPU Thermal Throttle Limit at the motherboard to be 83°C.
And I've noticed that it does good job staying around between 83°C and 85°C.

My use for this thing is an edge case and not even recommended by Noctua but I decided to cool my 11600k in an ITX case. I use a Lian Li 150 so this is probably the worst case scenario this cooler could be put in.

Surprising though it fairs decently well. My idle temps are at 50 C and max load after 20 min is 90 C. These temps are not amazing but mind you I’m only using one exhaust and intake on each side of the case and the max temp for Intel is 115 C so that’s well within temp. In a better environment I’m sure this cooler would do even better so I’d highly recommend it if you want to do a semi passive type build.
