The NH-U12A is the latest, 5th generation of Noctua’s award-winning NH-U12 series of 120mm size premium-quality quiet CPU coolers. Conceived to push the envelope of the 120mm form factor, it combines two of Noctua’s flagship model NF-A12x25 PWM 120mm fans with a completely redesigned heatsink featuring 7 heatpipes and an increased fin surface area for superior heat dissipation. This way, the NH-U12A can rival the performance of many 140mm size coolers while offering 120mm class case and PCIe compatibility. Topped off with the trusted, pro-grade SecuFirm2 multi-socket mounting system and Noctua’s proven NT-H1 thermal compound, the NH-U12A is a deluxe choice that combines top-tier performance with excellent compatibility and outstanding quietness of operation.

Award-winning NH-U12 seriesFirst introduced in 2005, Noctua’s NH-U12 series has won more than 600 awards and recommendations from leading international hardware websites and magazines. The NH-U12A is the latest addition to this prestigious series that has established itself as a benchmark for premium-quality quiet 120mm coolers. |
100% RAM compatibility on LGA115x and AM4Due to its asymmetric design, the NH-U12A does not overhang the RAM slots on Intel LGA115x and AMD AM4 based motherboards, which ensures easy access to the modules and 100% compatibility with tall heat-spreaders. On LGA2066, the rear fan will overhang the RAM slots on the left-hand side of the socket, so RAM modules should not exceed 42mm in height. * |
Dual NF-A12 120mm fansThe NF-A12x25 is a highly optimised next-generation 120mm fan that integrates Noctua’s latest innovations in aerodynamic engineering in order to achieve an unprecedented level of quiet cooling performance. Using this elite-class fan in a push/pull dual fan configuration is one of the cornerstones of the NH-U12A’s commanding performance and acoustic efficiency. |
Classic 120mm tower size for excellent case and PCIe compatibilityStanding 158mm tall, the NH-U12A is short enough to fit most modern mid- or high-end tower cases. Measuring 125mm wide (including fan and fan clips), the cooler stays clear of the top PCIe slot on most standard ATX or Micro-ATX motherboards, ensuring optimum compatibility with multi-GPU setups. |

Mounting is easy...apply the backplate through the pre drilled holes around the cpu and screw in the spacers and hardware on the front (AMD & Intel hardware both included) . Throwing the heatsink on was a bit fiddly as you cant feel if you are seated correctly due to the spring tension on the screws nor can you see very well. Not a big deal...just dont fully tighten one side. Get both screws to catch before screwing both sides down. Fan mounting is intuitive. If you have tall memory the fans can mount as high as you like to accommodate as long as the heatsink isnt in the way. (De Wae)
My i9 9900k took a modest OC to 4.7 using liquid metal instead of thermal paste in a well ventilated case with noctua 140mms moving air around. The cpu idles at 33-37c. AIDA64 trial version stresses my cpu to 100% usage and indicates about 70c.
Looks like a success.

Best part, it’s fits in my Core P3 now with the glass mounted. Old D15 cooler would only work with single fan in middle of towers. Could not get dual 140s with the Core P3 and with tall memory.
If worried about space, this is the cooler to get.
8700k delidded @ 5ghz hits 65c after 2 hours of prime95 stress on this cooler. D15 got to 63-64c. So that is awesome for how small this cooler is.
CONS - brown fans and no chromax covers for hearsink. Have not heard back from NOCTUA if those will be released anytime soon.

Update - 9 Apr 2019
While running the NH-U12A cooler since 29 Mar 2019. It has been a great addition to my PC.
I am running a i7-8086K (4Ghz (5Ghz OC)), EVGA 1080 Ti SC2, EVGA Z370 Classified (gaming). My CPU is running on Auto settings (in BIOS) which allows the CPU multiplier to run the CPU from 4Ghz to 4.6Ghz when the system needs it without OC’ing. This allows me to run only 1 CPU fan. While gaming, my temps max out at 53C and 33C at idle as per MOBO CPU LED readout. If later, I decide to OC to 5Ghz I will install the second fan (DO NOT OC with 1 CPU fan).
If you plan to game on your PC, upgrade to the NH-U12A if your PC case does not allow for the NH-D15. I had to return my NH-D15 because my case was just a bit smaller than the cooler. I could have kept the NH-D15 if I left the PC door off but it would have looked so wrong for so many reasons.
