How It's Made: Popcorn Poppers
Our poppers are among the best-selling items in our microwave line, and it's no wonder they're so pop-ular--they work like a charm, yet require no oil! Our poppers are made using a propriety material that is BPA and Melamine-free. The raw material resembles white clay, and is soft to the touch. It is carefully cut and weighed by hand before it gets molded. Next, it is placed into a compression molding machine, which combines hydraulic pressure with heat to trigger a curing process. The material 'bakes' and cures inside of the press for just a minute at around 450 degrees F. This material is what differentiates our poppers from other less expensive ones on the market---ours are actually oven safe to 400 degrees F forever once they're cured, so they never melt. Once the curing process has completed, the press opens, and the popper comes out. Each popper goes through a hand-finishing process by one of our skilled craftspeople to smooth and trim the edges before being paired up with a clear lid.
Nordic Ware was founded in 1946 by a determined wife, Dotty, and her resourceful husband Dave, newly back from the second world war. With only $500 in their pockets, a few good ideas and a desire to create a business of their own, a humble kitchenware company was launched from the basement of their home in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In the beginning, Nordic Ware’s product line was only a handful of items, all of which were specialty Scandinavian ethnic cookware products. But times have changed! 70 years later with a good measure of perseverance added, Nordic Ware is still proudly manufacturing the vast majority of its products in Minneapolis. We’re proud to say that we’re still family-owned and operated, with three generations involved in our business, and each year we add innovative items to our expansive kitchenware line.
70 Years of Innovation
With wife Dotty at his side, Dave Dalquist returned from WWII to start a business. From humble beginnings in a basement, Nordic Ware has become an internationally distributed kitchenware brand with a variety of product lines, hundreds of products and millions of fans!
Still a family owned and operated in the US, the company is honored to occupy a place in the new Food History exhibit at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Last fall, Nordic Ware was chosen for the prestigious 2015 Minnesota Manufacturing Award for Sustainability, which firms we work hard to minimize our environmental footprint. Our company moves into 2016 poised for the future, with last year setting an all-time record in sales volume and production efficiency.

I experimented with many different combinations of corn kernels and oil, as well as with-oil and without-oil. Yellow corn and white corn, vegetable oil and coconut oil (and peanut oil), shorter popping times, longer popping times, etc. etc. etc. You name the combination, and I've probably tried it. And based on my extensive experimentation, I've concluded there is no magic formula that allows for this "microwave popper" to consistently produce great popcorn. And what's really annoying is that just a few seconds of microwave "over-pop" results in many burned pops. I even experimented with varying levels of microwave power, and nothing came close to achieving the quality and 'size of pop' that I consistently achieve with my old fashioned method of popping corn in a pan on the stove (and no burned popcorn). I would not recommend wasting your money on this item if you have high quality expectations when it comes to popcorn.
With this, I “preheat” the microwave by heating a mug of water for a minute or two. Then I preheat a teaspoon of coconut oil it it for 30 seconds on high. Then add a 1/3 cup of organic popcorn. Stir to cover Kerman’s in oil. Return to microwave. Set it for 3 minutes. The popping usually slows at around 2-1/2 minutes. Listen and be prepared to stop it before you burn your corn. Immediately remove the lid to allow steam to escape. Add butter, salt, or any season you like. Personally, I love Johnny’s GarlicSpread seasoning with a little butter. Yum! Can’t get enough!
