I bought one of these in 2010. It was great. The base was perfectly weighted, and the whole thing weighed 2 pounds 10 ounces.

The new model I just bought for a different bathroom is 1 pound 13 ounces. It's too lightweight when pulling on the towels.

Works two thirds of the way

Works as advertised for the first two thirds of the roll, but then the pressure is not enough to hold the roll while you tear a towel off. If you place a finger on either the roll or the pressure plate, it still works perfectly, but if you don't, you'll have the same problem as you thought you were correcting: it won't tear off cleanly and you'll end up with more towels than you wanted.
At the beginning of the roll, when this device is working as it's supposed to, there is still a caveat. You must align the perforation just beyond the pressure plate, no more than an inch in order to tear off the towel with one hand; otherwise you will only sometimes get a single towel. I've tried numerous devices to get the desired result and this one comes the closest to actually working. The ratchet-driven system tightens up as it gets closer to the end of the roll, which theoretically would solve the problem, but it gets too tight and you can't pull the towels out without using both hands. This one doesn't tighten the roll, but the pressure plate doesn't get tighter, which is the problem. I don't think there is an ideal solution to this perplexing problem.

I bought this paper towel holder in the end of Feb 2017 and was moderately satisfied. It works well to allow one-handed paper towel access, but only when there is a brand-new full roll of paper towels. If less than a new roll, the whole unit just spins when you try to tear one off.

It lasted 2 years and 8 months before the spring mechanism in the arm has now failed, rendering the one-handed benefit moot. For a $25 paper towel roll, I would expect a longer life so I won't be repurchasing.

good luck. It lasted just past the return date and completely broke. The arm wouldn't lock in an outward position to load the towels. Not really that big of a deal, but an annoyance. Then it took two hands to remove the towels. Something inside broke(can hear a rattle) and the towel holder would barely turn. After taking it off the counter, I found a piece of black plastic underneath. I'm now back to setting the paper towels on the counter by themselves and am out $24. Bad product
