The plunger has a very thin, floppy seal that doesn't seat snuggly inside the thermos canister. It is easy to put it in crooked and have coffee grounds get past the seal. The frame around the mesh/filter is plastic and I prefer metal but that's a personal preference. I don't like how much plastic is sitting in hot, acidic coffee.
The lid (at the top of the plunger) is hollow metal and the plunger stem runs through it loosely with a gap in the hollow lid on top and underneath, allowing water to get inside and rust, etc.
The press leaves a good 1/3 c of liquid stuck in the bottom of the thermos that you can't pour out. I end up having to take the plunger out, get another handheld strainer and pour the rest of the coffee into my cup because I don't want to waste expensive coffee.
The "wood" handle and plunger cap is pretty fake looking close up but it is soft and easy to grip and doesn't get hot. It looks ok from far away. The handle has two metal screws that are visible if you tilt the press over slightly. I wish they could have hid the screws better because they are quite large but that isn't a big issue. It's more that it's a rust issue and a place that can build up gunk over time. Also, the silicone-style handle is not flush against metal thermos. There's a slight gap which for the price of this unit, I think is a lazy oversight.
One more thing: while I love the black and it goes with my black kitchen appliances, it spots very easily and gets scummy looking if you don't dry it really well after washing.
Summary: I like the uniqueness of this compared to my old glass French press. I like the thick thermos and what the company was trying to achieve with styling. However, I feel this could be manufactured with better quality given the pricetag.
I would caution the user to HAND WASH this French press to avoid damage to the handle or black finish or the seal that would likely happen in a dishwasher. The capacity is four 8 ounce cups for a total of 32 ounces which I verified by filling from a measuring beaker. I like the look of this French press in my kitchen and am happy to have a product that keeps my coffee hot for a few hours. That summarizes the product.
Now let’s talk about the coffee that it makes. Summary instructions come with the product but you should look at some YouTube videos to get a quick course on how to make a great cup of coffee if this is your first experience with a French press. You will need to use a coarse grind so not to clog the filter. Place the required amount of coffee in the French press for how many cups you wish to make. Pour in water heated to 190 Deg F to 200 Deg F then set a timer for four minutes and place the lid on top with the plunger pulled to the top. Rotate the lid to align its opening with the spout. After the timer beeps, then SLOWLY depress the plunger so push the grounds to the bottom separating them from the brewed coffee. Now, pour and enjoy. It will take me some trial and error to get the best combination of coffee grind and brew time. My first trial made coffee that tasted as good or better than my drip coffee using the same beans. I plan to enjoy this French press. Nice when making coffee for yourself or a guest.
-Arrived with paint chipped off in one spot
-Arrived with dirt or small dark pieces of metal inside
-Metal plunger can make a very annoying squeaking sound when moving through the lid
-There are plastic parts inside the container, but there are no claims of it being BPA free
