If you have a lifepo4 battery bank you understand that charging outside of solar can be a challenge, this unit does accomplish that. I charge a 200 AH lifepo4 battery with it on a pop up trailer that I use for off grid camping for up to two weeks at a time. I was looking for a charger that could be run off my 1800 watt generator or charge from shore but since that does not exist in my price range I found this instead. I chose the 20A version as I do not want to stress my generator too much, and maybe down the road I will tie in my tow vehicles power as well. I used a cheaper 120 volt to 12 volt 30 amp regulated power supply which thus far seems to work well. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that the instructions are complete garbage, after several attempts at the DIP switch settings I contacted reneogy and they instructed me that the switches should be set to S1 off, S2 on, S3 on, S4 on, S5 off for lifepo4. I have only had a couple field trials of this charger thus far and I am not using my vehicle to charge the bank currently so longevity is unknown. The one other thing I don't like is it pushes my bank slightly higher than my solar setup does which I have set to 14.15 volts, but it is not going to be a primary charger in my case only a shore charger that I use for backup and when solar is not available or impractical (I have to remove my panels).
Received charger and was delayed in getting installed in my RV. The return window had closed before I had a chance to install and test the unit. I could not get the unit to charge after installation even after testing and retesting the installation. I still had no output from the charger even though the green light was on.
I fnally gave up and contacted Renogy CS and sent a video of my tests, installation, and setup. They sent me an RMA. Once they received the unit, it was tested and they notified me that it worked fine and I would need to pay for return shipping to get it back. After a lot of discussion I did agree to do that but on the conditions that if it did not work, I would want a full refund of all costs involved with the unit and shipping.
Technicians agreed to review the video I had sent before getting authorization to return and noticed the dip switches were incorrect. I did not believe that was true but rechecked and was still convinced they were correct per the manual. Since they missed that point, they did agree to return the unit without charge. I did see the ON indicator on the bottom side of the dip switches when I inspected closely in good lighting. I had the switches set exactly the opposite since I assumed up was on. With the change, the unit worked just fine.
If you purchase a unit, make sure you download the latest manual on the website. It has been changed to reflect the position of the dip switches and a few other clarifications. It is still a little vague on the wiring of the run signal and low current input but much improved from the previous manual. Mostly straight forward however. At this point I am pleased and I only subtracted a star for the confusion on the dip switches. I would give support 5 stars for helping me out however.
I bought this because I added a Lithium house battery to my camper. You need this charger or one like it because you can't charge directly off the alternator...you need to charge off of the truck battery. The charger is not all that easy to install because all the wiring and fusing required is a little challenging and you need to factor in the cost of the wire, fuses and connectors. If you are reasonably handy at stripping wires, crimping connectors, and using a multi-meter, it is doable but pay close attention to the wiring instructions. Never having done an install like this, I had a little trouble finding a fused circuit for the D+ that worked only when the ignition was on. I got it all installed and it did not work. I tested everything by isolating the elements of the system and concluded I had a bad unit. I contacted Renogy to make sure I had not missed anything and they gave me a few suggestions about the problem. After exploring their suggestions, it reaffirmed my assessment that the charger was bad. I contacted them again and they said send it in. It took about three weeks for them to receive, test and conclude that the charger was bad and they sent me a new one.
The new one worked flawlessly and charges my 100amp battery from 0% to 100% in about 5 hours of driving. I am now happy with the charger and it fits my needs. The unit seems solid but I deducted one star because I got a bad unit which took me many hours to resolve the situation.
Product is super cool. Very easy to install. MAKE SURE TO TURN IT OFF WHEN THE TRUCKS OFF. I made a switch instead of tapping into a circuit and def forgot the first time and fried both diesel batteries running a load while the truck was off. 🤪
I added this to the rear of my "overlanding" 4runner for charging my Duracell AGM house battery. Even though I'm running 6awg wire from the front of the vehicle, there's a bit of voltage drop, and the alternator is a compensating variety so it doesn't provide the voltage to properly charge an AGM.
I picked up a set of leads with Anderson powerpole connectors to allow me to quickly bypass the charger in the event of a failure but I'm not expecting that. Without the charger, even longer trips haven't been nearly enough to top off the battery and keep it full for a weekend. Now, I expect a few hours of driving will allow me almost 2 days of run time on the fridge (51L fridge, 55ah AGM battery).
Connections are simple and pretty heavy duty, not unlike a typical car amplifier or other high-powered 12VDC appliance. My only gripe so far has been the noise. I've got the unit attached to the side of my storage box in the rear of the vehicle. Depending on the charge state it kicks the fans into high-speed and is quite noticeable in the cabin. I'm planning to move it to a more restrictive location and add some louvers to allow the heat to escape, but block some of the noise.
I have this mounted in my 2019 Sprinter and love it.
Pros: Does what it says it will do. I get 39-40 amps output and I don't have to worry about my LiFePO4 batties destroying my alternator because this unit should never pull more than 50-60 amps of draw.
Cons: The original manual sucks. (Supposedly it's being updated.) The dip switch settings are not correctly stated and neither is the wire size recommendations. I had to rewire my unit because of the manual costing me time and money.
Great unit, just make sure you get the proper manual before installing.
I bought this before understanding my 2001 dodge class B Pleasure Way. Couldn't find wiring schematic . I would have been better off replacing the rv converter. More money but less work in the long run. The battery compartment, where I'm putting the lithium battery is at the end of the chassis wiring. The current from my OEM converter and alternator are hitting all components before charging battery. Trying to find the correct spot to intercept the lower (13.6 v) power cable so I can install the DC to DC 14.6 v charger is a nightmare.
The charger is pretty great once you get it set up. It does what it should. Seems to hold up well.
The manual on the other hand is terrible. Specificly the section on the dip switch settings. There is very little explanation for the chargers behavior and the names used are inconsistent between pages so that you are never quite sure what the manual is referring to. Also I'm like 90% sure the table has the S5 dip switch backwords (lead acid or lithium) so be careful and monitor your battery over a full charge/discharge cycle before leaving it alone with this charger as you can't trust the manual.
