The company RIEDEL is a family owned, 300 year-old crystal company known to be the inventor of varietal specific stemware. The glamorous Art Nouveau period

Two ‘Louis’ tumblers were created as part of the Riedel Design Awards 2017 in Venice, when Kyle Solá won the Riedel Young Designer Competition with his innovative design.

‘Fire’ is distinguished by its dynamic, flame-like decoration and was designed by Georg Riedel. These elegant glasses are made to be lighter and finer than the sturdier ‘Louis’ and ‘Spey’ ranges. ‘Optical O’ is based on the popular ‘O’ series of stemless wine glasses and was designed by Maximilian J. It’s a high quality glass. There’s some weight to it and it feels good in your hand. The whisky is reflected beautifully in the glass. I think it’s really value for money.

I had to order twice because the first time had a broken glass shattered. The box was damaged but the outer amazon box wasn’t damaged. So, I suspect that it was already broken before it was passed to amazon for handling the delivery. I initiated the return process from amazon and got my money back after a few weeks.

Very Stylish Looking Whiskey Glass / Hefty / Thicker Rim

With name derived from Scotland’s River Spey (and made in Germany), these are stunning out of the box. Beautiful crystal glass. Intricate design. At 15.1 ounces weight these are heavy. I prefer something a bit lighter, but heavier ones like these are popular as well. The rims are a bit too thick for my taste - odd since one of crystal’s features is that it can be cut quite thin. They hold just under 11 fluid ounces filled to the brim. They’re 4” high and a bit over 3” wide. I’ve “tested” quite a few different whiskey glasses recently with a jigger of scotch, splash of water, and a bit of ice. Haven’t yet discovered the “perfect” one. Each has attributes and drawbacks.

Edit (4/19): Over the past 2 months since writing I’ve found myself drinking more and more from the Atterstone 4-Piece Whiskey Box Set (separate review) and less and less from these. If vessel appearance is important, these Speys are beautiful. If for personal / regular use, I prefer the square style (like the Attersons). The larger Ralph Lauren Brogan (separate review) are lovely when filled and have thinner rims, which is nice. But they’re heavy and have more capacity than scotch drinkers (like myself) want. If you’re the mixed-drink type, you may well appreciate all that volume. My least favorite is the twist style glass. The inside funnel shape and heavy base combine to make it very hard to judge how much liquid is left as you drink.

Side Note: I recently enjoyed the 2002 movie “Spy Game” staring Robert Redford. Late in the flick Redford is seen seated at his desk alongside a bottle of scotch and a lovely tumbler bearing a striking resemblance to these Speys. If they’re good enough for Redford, they’re good enough for me. :)

Really Nice But Really Heavy

This is nice drinkware, but it's really heavy. I seen these at Macy's, for the same price, but didn't want to buy them from Macy's. For some reason, I've been avoiding Macy's, while that's my favorite store. Although, I'm glad this Amazon merchant had them for sale instead. I purchased the two taller one's also. I like how they look, and how very straight the cup is from top to bottom. I like how the bottom doesn't indent inward with any bevels. Plus, when you look through the glass to the bottom, it also has a nice glass-cut design like the sides. These are very nice. The heaviness is from how thick the bottom of the glass is, which is about an inch thickness of glass. I'm pretty clumsy, so, tipping it over is something that seems not likely to happen due to the heaviness from that inch of thickness at the bottom; the cup's sturdiness will probably stop me instead, from knocking it over. Most of all, I got these for how they look. It's hard to find some nice ones with the details I described, and I had been looking at these for a while.

The glasses are beautiful, come nicely packaged, look great on my bar, and fit my hand nicely. As a side note, they appear to be the same as the Hotel Astor glasses that sell for quite a bit more. Reviewer RL for that item put me onto this. I’m glad I followed his suggestion and did some research. I couldn’t be happier with this purchase. I like Riedel glassware, and these do not disappoint.
