5.0 out of 5 stars The Risk game that is NOT Risk
Reviewed in the United States on 24 December 2017
We too could not believe that a) a risk game that sold for $40 (at the time of this purchase) and b) that it really isn't Risk.

A round consist of several steps:
1. Pick two card from your hand of command cards and stack them in the order you want to play the cards.
2. Turn 1 everyone reveals their top card and starting with the first player actions on the card are taken
3. Continue clockwise around the table everyone taking the action of their card...but no combat even if in a disputed territory with an opponent
4. Turn 2 everyone reveals and plays their second card and continues clockwise again
5. Resolve battles (There are up to four stages of battling depending which combination of the four unit types are present for the battle).
6. Round 1 is over, no rinse-repeat for round 2, etc.
7. Continue rounds (made up of turns) until someone(s) has attained 7 crowns and held 7 until the end of the round. In the case of a tie, the player with the most money wins; if still tied, the player with the 1st player marker wins.

This game loses a 1/2 star for requiring 4-players. Even with 4-players, one player could quietly expand and do their thing without ever interacting with another player...the map is that big and/or the actions that contained. This is why the instructions for 2- or 3-player talking about using an AI player for the other armies. It shouldn't be called a variant, but simply you need to do that for a 2- or 3-player game to make it work.

There is literally no resemblance to Risk in any of these turns, except the Rank 4 fight has some similarities...but you're limited to how many dice the attacker & defender can roll, regardless of how many armies are on the disputed territory.
There is a Mission Card variant rule to add some variety to the game.

Our first game of 4-players took 2.5hours as we were learning the game. Subsequent games were close to 90-minutes. Again unlike Risk, this did not take all day to play.

OVERALL:
4.5-stars for our first few games as we really liked it, but you must have 4-players (real or AI players)
