I want the TV to connect to my wifi, but I don't have Internet. Wifi requires that the TV connect to Samsung's service for wifi to work. So no wifi without internet. If I connect it to the internet, it defaults to Samsung's TV Plus whether I like it or not. I get sponsored content whether I like it or not. I can't delete the built in apps although I suspect most consumers won't use man of them. I can't use the built in Apple TV without connecting to Samsung. All of the internet based Samsung services are at best annoying and intrusive. It appears to me they built the product to serve additional revenue streams for Samsung instead of as a TV for consumers.
I will use it without internet connectivity with an external Apple TV. I will enjoy the great picture and freedom from Samsung's ads, sponsored content, and monitoring. And it will be my first and last Samsung product.
It is a shame you can't buy a decent TV anymore without connecting it to the Internet and enduring ads, sponsored content, and tracking. A "smart" product, once sold, should serve the consumer's needs, not Samsung's.
Set-up was easy, but I suspect it's because this is our 4th Samsung Smart TV so we knew the ropes. If you're setting up a DVR or Blu-Ray player, one thing you should know: you can't select and device and rename it in one step. You need to identify the device, accept it ("OK") and then rename it.
This set seems to be smarter than our other Samsung TVs when it comes to older TV programs and movies. They automatically appear in a 4:3 format.
One thing we have noticed: it takes longer to switch channels (Comcast) than with our other sets. The screen actually goes black for a second or two.
Our biggest problem: the legs. They are 25.5 inches apart (outside measurements). So this set would not sit on the same stand we had been using for the 2015 model. The only reasonably-priced stand we could find, we had to get from another company. It is a "wire" cart and the legs of this TV model are so narrow, they wouldn't fit solidly on the cart. So we improvised: laid down some heavy cardboard and taped it solidly to the top of the cart. Then we placed the TV on top of it and taped down the legs.
Sound quality is so-so, and we will probably get a soundbar for it next year (the only advantage of our having to buy a new stand for this TV is that there is room for a Sonos soundbar).
Re the picture quality: to be honest, we can't see all that much difference from the 2015 set, but we've only had it up and running for a few days.
