Edit: Amazon sent me a replacement and I no longer have these thermal issues with my Macs.
I really wanted to like this (the 2TB model) but it's unreliable. I may try it again after Samsung has fixed the bugs, but for now I'll be returning it soon. I tried Samsung's support and it routed me down a road to nowhere, so I'm done.
The good: It's really fast when it works. Things like copying enormous file folders to and from it seem fine.
The unacceptable: Downloading multiple file streams to it from the Internet results in the drive just hanging for seconds at a time. Eventually, it wakes up, but this repeats again and again. I also have the T3 and T5 and they don't have this problem.
In case anyone at Samsung is listening:
I installed the setup software on a Mac and set a password and 4 fingerprints. I also updated it to the latest firmware. I left the filesystem as it was out of the box (exfat) The machine I actually use it on is a Chromebook, specifically the Google Pixelbook (original, not the Go).
I exchanged it for the same model and the replacement has the same issue. I have to decide now whether I want to keep it in the hopes that Samsung fixes the bug or give up on the T7 and get a T5 instead. Samsung, I'm not your beta tester, but I'll be happy to submit a detailed report of the problem if you give me an easy way to do that.
It's worse than I thought. The drive essentially shuts down sporadically even while just playing a video file stored on it. That makes it only good for file backup. I can't believe this thing made it to market, how did they even test it?
Update: Either this SSD has bugs or was received damaged. It has issues loading stuff thoroughly on forza horizon. Cannot effectively play with this issue. It'll get stuck in loading screens as well as not load maps fully so it'll show no road or land around you.
Another really annoying thing I noticed was when beginning an online match in ranked team racing, right when you are able to start driving, at like the 5 second mark the entire screen pauses for like 2 seconds so if you are turning during that pause, it is virtually impossible to not crash or fly off the road. This happens in 80%+ races I begin online. Truly thrown off about this issue as I was expecting a beefed up version of the t5 ssd. Will return and stick with the T5 SSD for now until the bugs get worked out. Very dissapointed
