It is impossible not to admire someone who has the nerve and arrogance to take on such a big subject. And much of this book is entertaining, pacy and interesting. But sometimes you are left wondering if the approach is a little glib. A detailed knowledge of one or two of the areas he covers leaves one scratching one’s head and thinking “well that’s not quite right...” which then makes one wonder about the accuracy and nuance of so many of the other areas - are things really as simple and straightforward? The book is a compelling read, but perhaps only for the whole which is definitely more than the sum of its parts
I bought this book for a friend, but as there were 2 left,I thought I might as well buy the other for myself. I have just been dipping in to it as it only arrived on Friday so it will take some time to read. My friend won't collect his until tomorrow. Many thanks for speedy delivery and very good condition.
The book is nice and indeed explain a brief history of humankind. However, the author just picked up some pieces of facts, which is interesting, but I think is not the most important in history. Reading other books you can find out that there was a lot more important fact not mentioned in this book.
The smugness of this author is practically dripping off the page, I wouldn't want to sit next to him at a dinner party, but his research is undeniably awesome. Well worth a read if you can get past his self-satisfied writing style, although now you've read this it'll be hard not to notice.
Heard extracts of this on Radio Four and was captivated. Bought it and haven't regretted it. I'd be surprised if armchair philosophers did not get anything from this (and a few "real" ones). A good general history of mankind since the days of hunter gatherers included too. Certainly changed my perception on a subject I thought I knew a bit about. Recommended.
